From the rustling palm fronds of Trinidad and Tobago, to the platinum beaches of Barbados and tantalising food on the spice island of Grenada, the Caribbean covers all your holiday desires. Diving in the crystal-clear sea, lounging by a private pool, and beach sundowners is what a Caribbean holiday is all about. Staying at a luxurious self-catered villa is the perfect way to experience the islands, and we’ve rounded up the best in the region.

Perched on a hilltop on the west coast of Tobago, The Villas at Stonehaven pair sea views with landscaped gardens and spacious living quarters. The three- or four-bedroomed villas come with private infinity pools and personal housekeepers who can cook a local meal in your gourmet kitchen on request. There’s a clubhouse where you can socialise in style with other guests, or you may prefer to sip a sundowner at the cocktail bar or settle down for dinner at the Pavilion restaurant.

2. Eagle's Base Villa & Cottage, Tobago

Set in the lush, tropical mountains of Orange Hill, Eagle’s Base enjoys panoramas over the rolling land to the azure sea. Hammocks strung up on the porch and a water-feature trickling into the infinity pool give a rustic feel. The kitchen is painted in hummingbird blue and the living space has a glass wall, letting in lots of natural light. Doors slide open to remove the barrier between indoors and outdoors. The main villa has six bedrooms, and an additional bedroom can be arranged in the cute cottage in the garden.

Each of the villas, which range from one to five bedrooms, comes with a private pool where you might spot the odd hummingbird rehydrating during the day. Terraces with hammocks, dining tables, day beds, and striking Piton views are a fabulous bonus.

The villas themselves come in all shapes, styles and sizes; from palatial mansions to luxurious one-bedroom bolt holes. Each has a private pool, loads of outdoor space and easy access to the boat jetty at Marigot Bay. What’s more, there’s a funicular at the resort so you can take advantage of the stunning hilltop location without getting sore legs.

5. The Hamilton Beach Villa & Spa, St Kitts & Nevis

Spa Hotel, Apartment

Big rooms, kitchens with centre islands and private balconies with sea views are on offer at the Hamilton Beach Villa. That’s not to mention the communal spaces too, where you’ll find a maze of turquoise swimming pools running through the grounds, a private slice of white-sanded beach and a laid-back Caribbean grill should you tire of self-catering. A concierge service is available to organise pony trekking, scuba diving or deep-sea fishing so you can experience everything the castaway island of Nevis has to offer before returning to the comfort of your private villa.

The laid-back beach bar is the perfect spot for a sundowner, and there’s a communal barbecue for an al fresco evening feast.

Pristine, white villas with on-deck infinity pools are the other side of the coin; bright, open and with a glass wall to let in stunning sea views. An on-site spa and yoga sessions provide all you need for spiritual rejuvenation, and the thatched-roof restaurant feeds the stomach and soul, using the best of Grenada’s “Spice Island” bounty in rustic, Italian cuisine with a Caribbean twist.

The most striking thing about Casa de Campo is the replica 16th-century village perched on the hilltop, packed with shops and sights. Choose a palatial, multi-bedroomed villa by the ocean, or a hidden one-bedroom cottage in the lush gardens, or anything in between.

9. La Bougainvillea Hotel & Villas, Bahamas

Make the most of the waterside location with the stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking and snorkelling on offer.
