It’s safe to say the house likely played a strong role in her ever-popular children’s books, which were often influenced by her own experiences and love for country life. Rooms harness the hotel’s storybook heritage with plaid fabrics, vaulted wooden ceilings and earthy tones. Food champions local ingredients, so everything from the buttery beef to the fresh mackerel comes from nearby.

Windermere Manor Hotel

The Manor was originally built in 1850 and was home to the artist Hubert Coutts and his wife Mary. As one of the best hotels in Windermere, it retains much of the 19th-century building’s original charm, including the timbered ceiling, Victorian fireplace and stained-glass windows. Storrs Hall is a novel-worthy 18th-century mansion set amid beautiful grounds and once frequented by literary heavyweights Beatrix Potter and William Wordsworth. With large windows to look out over the view, it’s guaranteed to get the creative juices flowing. Owned by the Kennedy family since 1984, Lindeth Fell is a stunning Edwardian home with traditional touches such as parquet flooring, traditional sofas and pastoral artwork. Guests are welcomed with home-made scones and tea, and the friendly service from staff continues through your stay. The 14 bedrooms are all extremely spacious, with ensuite bathrooms and tasteful decor. There’s no restaurant, although cakes and sandwiches are on offer throughout the day.
