It’s not hard to see why Tenby, in Pembrokeshire, is one of the most popular coastal towns in Wales. Not only does it have long stretches of white sandy beaches, but it also has significant historical sites, such as the 12th-century Tenby Castle and the medieval wall that surrounds the town. A smart way to enjoy a seaside break here is to go for a vacation rental or cottage as close to the beach as you can find. Good thing, then, that Tenby is well stocked with both. Here are the best, all bookable on Culture Trip.

Glenholme Apartments, for shopping and seaside strolls

As far as convenient locations go, Glenholme Apartments takes some beating. Within strolling distance of South Beach and South Esplanade, it’s perfect for hitting the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path, or watching the finish of the Iron Man Wales. The town wall and the Five Arches, with all its shops, are just five minutes away, while Glenholme also offers easy access to the Oakwood Theme Park and Manor Park Zoo.

Lockinbar Holiday Apartment, for modern living

A contemporary, tiled kitchen, comfortable beds with Egyptian cotton sheets, 40-inch LCD televisions and a large garden are all part of the experience at the Lockinbar Holiday Apartment. For those nights you don’t want to cook, there’s a restaurant and, for the odd day trip, the Manor Wildlife Park is 5km (3mi) from the apartment, and Tenby Museum and Art Gallery just 800m (0.5mi).

Cobourg House 4, for romantic evenings on the sun deck

A snug cottage that sleeps two, Cobourg House 4 is tailor-made for a romantic getaway. With wooden floors, photos of seascapes and puffins, and striking green-and-black wallpaper adorned with stags and butterflies, the interior is stylish but homely. The sun deck is ideal for al fresco dining or a glass of wine at the end of a long day of sightseeing, which should include a trip down to the nearby Tenby Beach.

Belmont Flat 2, for city style in the country

Apartment

With a multi-coloured tiled kitchen, wooden floors and funky light fixtures, Belmont Flat 2 could be a pad in central London. The sights nearby are all vintage Tenby, though, including Tenby Beach and Tenby Castle. A bit further afield you’ll find Dinosaur Park, Manor House Wildlife Park, Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo and the Blue Lagoon Water Park to keep the kids happy.

Breeze Cottage, for a group getaway

Cottages

Breeze Cottage is made for socialising. A terraced self-catering cottage that sleeps six, it features a large stone fireplace with woodburning stove in the lounge for cosy nights in. The kitchen and dining area, on the other hand, is a large open space bathed in light and can host many a raucous family meal. The location is also special – Breeze Cottage sits on a cobbled street that leads to sandy Paragon Beach in one direction, and the town centre in the other.

Braeside, for when you need space

Cottages

A spacious, three-bedroom holiday home, Braeside allows you to really stretch out during your stay – whether that’s in the beautifully decorated lounge area, or on the outdoor paved patio. A huge plus is the location – close to North Tenby Beach and Tenby Castle – while the fact the house comes with a parking spot at the back takes a lot of hassle out of those big family holidays.

Bryn Y Mor 18, for easy access to nature

While Tenby Beach is only about a 15-minute walk away, these slick apartments come with an outdoor pool, just in case you really can’t wait to get in the water. For nature walks, head to the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, where the Welsh countryside is waiting to be discovered. Or take a 20-minute stroll to Tenby Golf Club for a few rounds.

Collingwood, for a cute cottage retreat

Cottages

One in a row of Insta-friendly, pastel-coloured cottages close to buzzing South Beach, Collingwood has a homely feel that relaxes you straight away. There is a slight catch, though. Very steep stairs leading up to the twin bedroom means it’s not recommended for children under six or the elderly. For the rest, there’s an open-plan lounge and dining room and small outside area to chat the night away.

Cobourg House 2, for castle hopping and beach days

If castle-spotting is your thing, spend time at Cobourg House 2. Tenby Castle, dating back to the 12th century, is less than 1km (0.6mi) away, while Carew Castle, with a fascinating history spanning 2,000 years, is 7km (4mi) away, and 11th-century Manorbier Castle, 10km (6mi) from the holiday cottage. If you are all castled out, North Tenby Beach is a short walk down the road.
