As Scotland‘s third largest city, Aberdeen combines traditional with modern, and nowhere is this more in evidence than in the bar scene. With the surge in popularity of well-made cocktails, in comfortable and relaxed surroundings, Aberdeen has certainly not failed to deliver. Here are five places you really should know about if you are a fan of mixology.

Orchid

Cocktail Bar, Cocktails

Orchid oozes class, from the understated (almost hidden) exterior to the knowledgeable and approachable bar staff, this is a bar to savour. The seating is comfortable and the music fits neatly, but it is the actual cocktails themselves that set this bar apart. When you watch the bar staff prepare your order they do not hide the fact they are enjoying themselves, lovingly creating a vast range of options, taking their time to get your drink exactly right. The range of spirits is remarkable, and the mixers and added ingredients outstanding and fresh.

Dusk Cocktail Bar

Bar, Pub Grub

Award-winning and discerning, Dusk harks back to the era of the stylish speakeasy. There is an extensive wine list, the Velvet Lounge can be hired for private functions, and it is even possible to hire a pop-up Dusk bar but, you’ll be pleased to know, it is in the cocktails themselves that Dusk really delivers. This is not a place to rush for a swift drink, here you need to take your time and enjoy every mouthful of whatever you choose to order (and the selection is marvellous, even before you go off-piste). The staff excel, the atmosphere is comfortable and sophisticated, and the drinks are so very tasty.

Ninety-Nine Bar

Bar, Pub Grub

Not only can you order classic cocktails from the menu at Ninety-Nine Bar and Kitchen, they also have a list of several you may never have heard of, let alone sampled. The atmosphere here is relaxed, with children welcome, and a tasty food menu to choose from; this is somewhere all the family can enjoy. The cocktail menu is seasonal, fun, and full of surprises, and the bar staff attentive and welcoming. You will definitely want to come back!

Soul Bar

Bar, Cocktail Bar, Pub Grub

One look at the location tells you why Soul Bar is thus named; the beautiful old church it is housed within still retains its splendour, despite the change in use (the stained glass deserves a special mention). This is a fantastic place to come during the day, as well as at night — as the chilled day time switches into the lively night, then so should your choice of cocktail. From the fun and fruity, to the sophisticated and strong, Soul Bar offers an extensive choice of options. They can also teach you how to mix your own, if you have a group of five or more and book ahead.

The Tippling House

Cocktail Bar, Cocktails

As you make your way into The Tippling House, pause for a moment to look at the window display, as these are often-changing works of art in themselves! Once inside you know you are in for a treat, as the attention to detail is obvious. The dining options utilise local produce where possible, the whisky selection is extensive, and the beer on offer also promotes Scottish brewers. The cocktail menu is eclectic and fascinating, and the bartenders love to talk about their craft or mix you something not listed. The Tippling House offers a Tasting Academy, and they also have a cocktail catering company, 10 Dollar Shake.
