Notting Hill has some of the best bars in the city. Whether your idea of a good night is getting cosy in a local boozer with a pint of real ale, or sipping on trendy cocktails shaken up by some of the city’s top mixologists, this West London neighbourhood has everything you need.

Boasting some of the best gin in London, this four-floor bar on Portobello Road is also a working distillery. The home of internationally renowned Portobello Road gin, this place also houses The Ginstitute, a critically acclaimed gin-blending experience, as well as two bars, a private dining room and three guest rooms. Sit outside with a G&T in summer and take in the market crowds as they flock by.

2. Visit Portobello Star, part of London's history

This historic bar in Portobello Road has been open since 1740, serving drinks to everyone from royals to musicians. These days, house-infused spirits, exotic cocktails and premium beers draw a cool and diverse crowd, including lots of neighbourhood locals. There is also a private events space where your own bartender will attend to you and your guests. The bar offers a mixology masterclass for those who want to take one of their delicious recipes home with them.

3. Enjoy delicious food and wine at The Elgin

This gastropub in the well-heeled area of Ladbroke Grove is quintessentially British with its listed bar and roaring wood fireplaces. If you’re more of a wine drinker, the pub has an excellent wine list, plus it’s the perfect spot for a substantial roast on a Sunday afternoon, or one of the classics such as bangers and mash or chicken Kiev.

4. Stop by Trailer Happiness for a slice of island life

This kitschy Polynesian cocktail bar serves up some of the most delicious tropical libations in the city, has DJs every weekend if you fancy a spin on the dance floor and offers tasty Caribbean-style snack food to line your stomach. It’s the perfect place to unwind on a Friday night, so head to this basement establishment and stay as late as you can.

5. Nurse your hangover with the best bloody mary at Electric Diner

For the most lethal bloody mary in town, look no further than the bar at this American-inspired diner. Cosy up on the plush red-leather bar stools or enjoy an Aperol spritz in the rare London sun at one of its outside tables. The food here is comforting and delicious, so dig into a cheeseburger or hash browns if you need a snack to see you through.

6. Stay for the game at The Cow Pub & Dining Rooms

On Sunday nights this pub is the ultimate spot to down a pint or three with the locals. The vibe is laid-back and traditional and they play the football, too, which is a bonus for sports fans. In summer, crowds spill out on to the pavement, and sometimes even the road. If you like seafood, this spot also has some of the freshest and tastiest in London – try the dozen oysters or the perfectly dressed crab.

7. Try the best spirit-based drinks at The Resting Room

This classic cocktail bar is part of The Distillery, but is tucked away on Blenheim Crescent, off the busy Portobello Road. You can expect eclectic, out-of-this-world drinks blended with spirits created on-site. Master distiller Jake Burger and his team not only whip up unique gin blends but also distill other spirits, including their sublime Characterful Vodka.
