10 London Restaurants Delivering Tasty Cuisine From Around the World
When a national lockdown was announced in the UK, restaurants were forced to adapt their business models to survive. Many local favourites serving cuisines from across the world were forced to shut up shop for the foreseeable future – but for others, business continues in the form of the humble takeaway.
London’s foodie landscape has all bases covered. Want Japanese? Sorted. How about Portuguese? Coming right up. Heading out for a Friday night meal to taste a new cuisine is the highlight of many of our weeks – with vibrant atmospheres a promise. However, lockdown in the UK has changed this overnight, as social distancing renders dining out a no-go. There is a way around this, though – the tried-and-true takeaway. Culture Trip curates 10 of the best delivery services around the city, all of which invite you to taste a different corner of the globe from the comfort of your sofa.
Four Legs London for a juicy American burger
Four Legs London has been offering delivery since the early days of lockdown, and it’s just expanded into a Sunday roast option, too. With a simplified menu of juicy cheeseburgers, crispy potatoes and fried chicken, this is the naughtiest of feasts. Operating out of Islington’s Compton Arms, its delivery zone includes most of North East London, up to the edges of Stoke Newington, and across to Clapton – sorry, West Londoners. Order through the website in the morning on the day, and your dinner will be delivered between 5pm and 9pm.
Bone Daddies for a warming bowl of ramen
When isn’t ramen a good idea? It’s belly warming and soul nourishing, which is exactly what we need at the moment. The traditional Tantanmen ramen, with its rich sesame broth and pork belly topping, will revive even the weariest of home cooks. Available via Deliveroo from the Old Street and Bermondsey locations, don’t forget to add a sake to your order to round off the experience. Kanpai! (Cheers!).
Crosstown Doughnuts for globally loved sugary delight
Available on Deliveroo and for pre-order through its website, Crosstown Doughnuts never fails to hit the spot when you’re craving something sweet. Founded by a Kiwi and an Australian, Crosstown does things a little differently to the traditional American doughnut. The world’s first sourdough doughnut offering, these sugar-laden treats come in experimental flavours, including lime and coconut and matcha tea, while you’ll also find all-time favourites such as raspberry jam and cinnamon sugar. Can’t decide which one? Order the popular box of 12.
Quality Chop House for fancy British grub
This beloved Clerkenwell restaurant has taken its menu online, while it’s also delivering essential groceries, wine and butchery bits. Meals include both classic British staples (such as confit potatoes and sausage rolls), and seasonal dishes, including cotswold chicken and braised lamb. Delivery is available on its website for those lucky enough to live in the delivery zone, which covers a radius of 10km (6.2 miles) from their Clerkenwell location.
Casa Do Frango for Portuguese chicken
Bringing a slice of sunny Portugal to London, Casa Do Frango is feeding mouths via Deliveroo from both its Shoreditch and London Bridge restaurants. Highlights of the menu include salt cod fritters and octopus salad, and fiery charcoal grilled piri piri chicken. It’s the kind of cuisine that brightens up glum days.
Nandine for an enormous Kurdish mezze
Luckily for those that live in and around Camberwell, much-loved Kurdish spot Nandine is open and delivering. The restaurant is keeping those south of the river well fed with hearty mezze and all the halloumi one could desire. Syrupy Baklava will cap off what is sure to be a delightful dinner.
Artusi for traditional Italian
Much-loved Peckham local Artusi is the place to go for an authentic Italian feast. Teaming up with sister restaurant Marcella, you can order nibbles, fresh pasta, mains and desserts through a form on its website. Think creamy burrata, chicken cacciatore and chocolate mousse – all brought directly to your door. Crack open a bottle of Montepulciano and make an evening of it.
Ombra for all your pasta, meat and cheese needs
Ombra is another Italian offering, but this time one which caters to Hackney locals. The store stocks everything from aperitivo to freshly made pasta and sauces ready for you to prep yourself at home. Plus, if you fancy a change from roasts, opt for one of its Sunday lasagnes, which come in two styles: traditional bolognese or courgette and pecorino.
Nayaab for that Indian curry you’ve been craving
This Fulham-based Indian spot is offering its full menu for both delivery and (socially distanced) collection. With amazing Indian dishes often seemingly impossible to perfect at home, it is a takeaway favourite. Nayaab highlights include lahori nihari (slow-cooked lamb with a special sauce) and the traditional silky-smooth chicken tikka masala.
Yard Sale Pizza for cheesy American-style goodness
Operating out of five stores, Yard Sale Pizza have North and East London covered. Arguably serving London’s best pizzas – Holy Pepperoni, Salsiccia e Friarielli (Italian sausage and broccoli marinated in garlic and chilli oil) and the Maestro being firm favourites – you can’t go wrong. As is the case when sitting down to eat in-house, it’s first come, first served, so be sure to order early – just don’t forget the garlic bread.
