The largest chocolate company in the UK was founded in Birmingham in 1824 by John Cadbury, and its famous factory in Bournville is the closest stand-in for Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory. Tours of Cadbury World feature tastings, animatronics, audiovisual displays on the history of chocolate and more. Here’s our pick of the best hotels nearby – you may even smell chocolate in the breeze – bookable on Culture Trip.
There’s timber in abundance in the appealing holiday cottages at Oak Tree Stables, with wooden beams, wood floors, natural wood furniture and wood-framed windows looking out towards the paddocks from a historic stable block. Horsey ornaments recall the building’s original function. Perks include a wood-fired hot tub, a wood-framed sauna and a peaceful country location in Wythall, just a few miles from Cadbury World.
You might expect a cricket theme from the name, but the Edgbaston will transport you back to the 1920s with lavish art deco details, framed black-and-white prints of New York in the Roaring Twenties and polished brass in abundance. The moody, speakeasy-style cocktail lounge is almost as big a draw as the rooms, with their free-standing baths, chequerboard floors and Great Gatsby lighting.
Boutique in the best way, the High Field Town House has a handy Edgbaston location and imaginative, arty rooms with design print wallpaper, antique furniture, bold fabrics and little glam touches, such as free-standing tubs in the bay windows. There’s a globe-trotting food menu, and behind the striking white cube of a building is an inviting beer garden with tables under umbrellas on the lawn.
A smart reinvention of a vintage office block, the Park Regis Birmingham has reimagined the formerly forlorn Auchinleck House as a sleek luxe hotel, with a spa, a cocktail terrace and an excellent restaurant – though busy, buzzy Broad Street is right on the doorstep. The spacious rooms are rather ritzy, with gleaming bathrooms and purple bedspreads that nod to the Cadbury colours.
Behind the Cube’s futuristic facade, the rooms at the Hotel Indigo Birmingham have been designed with a real sense of fun. Geometric patterns spill from walls to floors to fabrics to furniture, while bright colours and diagonals create a feeling of movement. Also, the floor-to-ceiling windows reveal giddying views over downtown. Add in a canal-side location within easy ambling distance of Gas Street, and this is Birmingham perfection.
This cosy Bournville hotel is so close to Cadbury World you can almost sense the sweet smell of chocolate from the factory floor. Art-inspired fabrics and papers add a splash of modern glam to snug bedrooms that look out over a flowery, private garden. There’s a licensed bar and a garden-side deck where you can sip a sundowner and smell the roses. Out front, Linden Road passes Cadbury Park and Cadbury World en route to Bournville station.

We are proud that, for more than a decade, millions like you have trusted our award-winning recommendations by people who deeply understand what makes certain places and communities so special.
Increasingly we believe the world needs more meaningful, real-life connections between curious travellers keen to explore the world in a more responsible way. That is why we have intensively curated a collection of premium small-group trips as an invitation to meet and connect with new, like-minded people for once-in-a-lifetime experiences in three categories: Culture Trips, Rail Trips and Private Trips. Our Trips are suitable for both solo travelers, couples and friends who want to explore the world together.
Culture Trips are deeply immersive 5 to 16 days itineraries, that combine authentic local experiences, exciting activities and 4-5* accommodation to look forward to at the end of each day. Our Rail Trips are our most planet-friendly itineraries that invite you to take the scenic route, relax whilst getting under the skin of a destination.
