In a city famed for its high street and high-end shopping, there are still a selection of exciting independent boutiques to discover. Take a step away from the bustling areas around Market Street, the Arndale Centre and Spinningfields (and don’t you dare head to the Trafford Centre); the majority of Manchester’s independent stores are located in its southern suburbs. If you’re looking for unique styles, quirky fashion, hard to find labels or just something a little different, take a look below at our little black book of the finest womenswear boutiques in and around the city.

Describing itself as Chorlton’s ‘neighbourhood store’, Object isn’t solely a womenswear boutique (it also focuses on menswear and home accessories) but its selection of linen garments earn it a place on this list. Stocking pure linen and linen-wool mix jumpsuits, aprons, dresses and culottes from a selection of Lithuanian-based linen labels, Object offers a simple and slow style that can’t be found elsewhere in the city. Make this your one-stop destination for a Nordic-inspired aesthetic.

Do you drag your boyfriend along with you on the lookout for young hip brands? Make West Didsbury’s favourite boutique, Steranko your first port of call. With the shop floor split 50-50 between men’s and women’s clothing, it’s the perfect place to shop together for all the clothing, shoes and accessories that you need to look effortlessly dressed. Having been open for 25 years, the staff are extremely knowledgeable about both their products and the local area. Head here to shop super cool brands such as Fjallraven, YMC and Superga while discovering new favourites including Rains, Samsøe & Samsøe and Great Plains.

McQueen Independent

Absolutely nothing to do with Alexander McQueen, this Beech Road gem is one of the city’s best purveyors of independent British and Scandinavian brands. Stocking stylish garbs by the likes of The White Pepper, Native Youth, Sol Sana and Antiform, it’s worth heading to the suburb of Chorlton (or nearby Didsbury Village, where it’s sister shop lies) for a well-earned respite from the busy city centre.
