For a holiday full of hikes in the mountains and picnics in the countryside, head to the Lake District. While it’s best known for its amazing restaurants and gorgeous hotels, sometimes it’s just easier to have your own space, with a fully-equipped kitchen and lounge area. Whether you want a relaxed, pet-friendly B&B with a kitchen, or fancy a luxury cosmopolitan pad, here are some of the best holiday apartments in the Lakes.

Offering ensuite rooms as well as one- to three- bedroom B&B apartments, the Embleton Spa Hotel is a relaxed and friendly affair in an 18th-century stone farmhouse. The dog-friendly apartments are all tastefully decorated and kitted out, and some also have private outdoor spaces. Guests are also welcome to use the Embleton Spa, which includes a heated indoor pool, gym and steam room. Breakfast is included, and the restaurant downstairs specialises in tasty, locally-sourced food with a view.

A more urban self-catered retreat, Jeffersons Hotel & Apartments are located in Barrow-in-Furness, a little way south of the Lakes.
