The Top 10 Breakfast and Brunch Spots in Cornwall
Nothing ever gets done in a hurry in Cornwall, least of all breakfast. Mornings here are a lazy affair, where things will get done d’reckly (at a non-specified time in the future), so the best way to get through this slow time of day is to sit back, order a full Cornish, and watch the surf roll in. Here are the best places in the county to do just that.
The Beached Lamb Café
Cafe, Healthy
Situated between Newquay’s two most popular beaches of Fistral and Towan sits the brightly coloured Beached Lamb Café. This inviting and quirky space plays funky beats throughout the day, and a menu which errs on the vegan and veggie friendly side of things. They also do some amazing smoothies, and loads of comfy armchairs to fall into after a heavy night on the cider. There’s also a dedicated chill out lounge, with beanbags and low-level tables, so you can practically be horizontal while devouring their tasty grub.
Gylly Beach Café
Bistro, Cafe, European
Sat right on the beach on Cornwall’s south coast, Gylly Beach Caff is one of the chillest places to see in the morning. Sit outside wrapped up in one of the complimentary blankets, wrap your hands around a large mug of tea, and stuff your face with out of this world local produce.
The Vault
Bar, Pub Grub
Set in an old bank at the top of Penzance’s most historical street, The Vault is popular amongst hipsters, grannies, families, and mums. At night it can turn a bit wild, but breakfasts here are a wonderful thing. If the sun is shining, the sun terrace is perfect for tanning, eating, and drinking tea, plus inside the Alice in Wonderland themed bar you’ll find are cubby holes to gossip in and great food to be eaten. The Kiwi Stacks are hands down the best thing on the breakfast menu, and you won’t be judged if you have a slice of red velvet cake for breakfast either – it’s delicious.
Truro Lounge
Bar, Restaurant, Pub Grub
With an interior of deep colours, retro wallpaper, cracked tiles, mismatched lampshades, vintage oil paintings and hand painted murals, the Truro Lounge is a beauty of a restaurant which is super relaxed. You’ll probably have to fight for a seat here as it’s pretty darn popular, but it’s worth the scrap if only for the bubble and squeak.
Esspressini
Cafe, Tea
This artisanal coffee shop in the heart of Falmouth prides itself on smooth coffee from all over the world, with strong relationships with the bean growers, so you know that your coffee has been handpicked with love. Esspressini serve brunch all the way through to mid afternoon, with sweet pastries and twists on brunch classics on the menu, which changes daily.
Cherry Trees Cafe
Cafe, Tea Room, Tea , Coffee
As you walk along Padstow’s picturesque harbour side, you will come across the lovely Cherry Trees Cafe. Not only are they open seven days a week but they are also dog friendly, so you can take your pooch for morning snacks, too. The menu here is out of this world; you can have trifle, banana pancakes, an avalanche of avocados, smoked haddock on walnut bread, with mushrooms. Delish.
Sunset Surf
Cafe, Pub Grub
Breakfast is always best served with a great view and there isn’t one better from the upper deck of Sunset Surf, just behind the Gwithian Beach car park. All the produce which comes out of the kitchen is local, hearty, and super tasty. Whether you want some sugar to pump you up for a morning surf, or an Eggs Royale to read the paper with, this is a stellar location, with stellar food to match.
Olive & Co.
Cafe, Healthy
This small, independent café in the middle of Liskeard is an absolute joy to stumble across in the mornings. With coffees from small independent roasters, shelves lined with beautiful loose-leafs teas, and a flowery garden to unwind in before the day has even begun, why would you want to go anywhere else? Weekday breakfasts are kept simple, with gorgeous sourdough toast served with jam, Marmite, or marmalade, and a selection of gooey pastries. Saturday mornings are all gourmet though, and the sourdough gets fully pimped with bacon, eggs, avocado, and more.
Potager Garden
Cafe, Tea
Once a bramble-choked and abandoned nursery, now a quiet oasis, Potager Garden and Cafe is definitely worth adding to your foodie wish list. The café itself is nestled in the plum trees in a converted green house, and serves up homemade cakes, veggie breakfasts, and really good coffee. Perfect for a sit down after you have wandered the gardens and peered in the windows of the artist studios. Potager Garden is open Thursday to Sunday every week.
Louis’ Tea Room
Cafe, Tea
What once started as a caravan in a field, is now a warm and welcoming timber shack on one of Cornwall’s highest and most beautiful spots. The veranda of Louis’ has a rather impressive view of the Tamar Valley and out to the Plymouth Breakwater on a clear day. Sitting here can make you feel as though you are on top of the world, so order a £4 fry up, sit back and feel like the King of Cornwall.
