Londoners needn’t travel all the way to Provence to experience stunning rolling hills and fields full of luscious lavender; these English lavender fields near London are less than an hour’s drive from the capital city!

Lavender is most prominent in the south of France during the summer months, with plenty of people flocking to the coastal provinces in their quest to frolic their way through beautiful seas of natural purple plants.

However, if your budget doesn’t quite stretch to France or you’re simply looking for something a little closer to home, this Surrey-based lavender field is up there with the best you’re likely to see – whatever the weather. Look, we can prove it.

Stunning lavender fields

Mayfield Lavender lies in the picturesque village of Banstead in Surrey. This family-run, organic lavender field welcomes thousands of visitors throughout the summer and is one of the most picture-perfect places you’re likely to visit in and around the UK’s capital city.

An original Victorian lavender field, the Banstead site was purchased by its managing director, Brendan Maye, in 2002. Mayfield was an empty field back then, and so 70,000 lavender plugs had to be planted – only for crows and magpies to pull them all up just as fast as they were sown! The following year, Brendan tried again and, thankfully, reaped much better results – those of which we see today.

The 25-acre Mayfield Lavender site has been open to visitors in peak times (summer) since 2008, with its sister site, Mayfield Lavender Nursery and Gift Shop in Epsom, open for the rest of the year. Both locations ensure that lavender is on show all year around and not just in the summer months!

Though it’s pleasing to look at and wandering through a lavender field could be seen as one of the more cathartic exercises in life, lavender is known as one of the healing plants. Often used to treat burns and bites, thanks to its antiseptic properties, you can also find it in plenty of products from body washes and tea through to organic oils and aromatherapy products – all of which are available to purchase from Mayfield Lavender Gift Shop in Epsom.
