Though not exactly packed with vegetarian eateries, the British overseas territory of Gibraltar offers non-meat eaters a good selection of cafés and restaurants. Whether you’re after a light snack in the old town or dinner overlooking a tranquil marina, read on for the best vegetarian restaurants and cafés in Gibraltar.

Sacarello's

Cafe, Coffee Shop, Restaurant, British, Vegetarian

Sacarello’s is one of Gibraltar’s most loved cafés and restaurants and offers an impressive selection of meat-free dishes. Its five ‘specials’ are changed three times a week, one of which is always vegetarian (typically a pasta dish), whilst on Fridays you can sample Torta de Acelgas, a Gibraltarian spinach pie. An extensive salad and quiche bar also provides plenty of choice for veggies. Even better, you can enjoy the food surrounded by works from Patrick Sacarello’s extensive art collection.

The Kasbar

Cafe, Restaurant, British, Vegan, Vegetarian

The only exclusively vegetarian and vegan restaurant in Gibraltar, Kasabar offers an innovate selection of meat-free dishes in a super-cool underground environment. Standouts are the potatoes with alioli and chives, the lentil burger and the quinoa salad, all of which have locals and visitors raving about this new opening. Live arts events such as poetry readings add to Kasbar’s trendy vibe, whilst the service is praised just as highly as the food.

LPH

Cafe, Restaurant, British

Located a few doors up from Sacarello’s on the busy shopping street of Irish Town, LPH is a small takeaway cafe that specialises in vegetarian and vegan food. Their signature is an open toastie of fresh avocado, salmon and poached eggs served on rye bread and topped with a dash of chili powder – a dish with enough flavour and substance to satisfy carnivores, too. Also available is a selection of veggie breakfasts, soups and pre-prepared lunchboxes to take away.

Verdi Verdi

Cafe, Restaurant, British, Middle Eastern

Poached eggs are also one of the menu’s star turns at Verdi Verdi, a vegetarian cafe in the heart of the old town. Here, they’re prepared with a middle-eastern twist and poached with garlic and tomatoes before being served either on toasted bread or a bagel. Also recommended are a stripped-down version of the British classic Welsh Rarebit – melted cheese on toast topped with Worcestershire Sauce – and the delicious hummus and falafel dishes.

Benjamin's Gourmet Foods

Cafe, British, Spanish

Mainly a takeout joint, Benjamin’s offers a good selection of fresh vegetarian and vegan meals, including quinoa salads, soups, sandwiches and clearly labelled gluten free options. The small cafe enjoys an enviable location on the waterfront in Ocean Village, a fashionable area of floating yachts and smart cocktail bars at the south end of Gibraltar. Good coffee and tasty snacks also make it a great spot to come in the morning or for an afternoon snack.

The Landings

Restaurant, Bar, Mediterranean, Spanish

For veggies who want the kind of waterfront location usually reserved for seafood restaurants (but without the fish), The Landings is a great choice for lunch or dinner. The restaurant has a spacious outside terrace overlooking the tranquil Queensway Marina, on which non-meat eaters can enjoy meals from a special vegetarian menu. Fresh and locally sourced ingredients mean dishes like the wild mushroom risotto and the parmigiana – Mediterranean vegetables roasted with mozzarella and veggie Parmesan – burst with flavour.

The Lord Nelson

Pub, Restaurant, British, Mediterranean

Situated on the old town’s principal square, The Lord Nelson pub and restaurant offers quality vegetarian fare that can be enjoyed on one of Gibraltar‘s most lively terraces. Non meat-eaters can choose from two types of pizza – margarita and vegetarian – or between the warm goats’ cheese salad, veggie burger, roasted vegetable and hummus baked potato or vegetable puff-pastry dish. Friendly and efficient table service out on the terrace makes the homemade vegetarian dishes all the more enjoyable.
