Where to Eat Caribbean Food in Amsterdam

There are literally hundreds of international restaurants in Amsterdam, including many establishments that cook, serve and sell dishes that originated on different continents. For example, there several excellent Caribbean eateries in the city that range from homey, neighbourhood cafés to larger, lively restaurants.

1. Plato Loco

Restaurant, Caribbean, Jerk, Jamaican

Plato Loco serves an impressive selection of delicacies from the Caribbean, including many hearty rice-based meals and Jamaican jerk dishes. The restaurant’s interior oozes laid-back vibes and features many tropical design elements. There’s also an awesome terrace outside that’s particularly lovely during sunny spells.

2. Rum Barrel

As its name suggests, this restaurant and bar in Amsterdam-Oost bases its drink menu heavily around rum. There are several excellent rum-heavy cocktails available at their bar, including classic Caribbean drinks like mojitos and hurricanes. Rum Barrel’s kitchen serves tapas-style dishes that are inspired by Caribbean and Latin American cuisine, such as small platters of fried chicken and spiced mussels.

3. Labyrinth

Labyrinth’s menu ties together flavours from the Caribbean, West Africa and America, creating a delightful selection of hearty, flavourful dishes that are meant for sharing. Aside from serving delicious meals (and cocktails), the restaurant hosts poetry and spoken word events throughout the week, including a popular open mic night on Mondays.

4. Calle Ocho

Calle Ocho is named after a bustling, multi-cultural street in Miami’s Little Havana neighbourhood that’s well-known for its Caribbean atmosphere and colorful culinary scene. In honour of its namesake, Calle Ocho serves a diverse selection of dishes from the Americas, including many mouthwatering Cuban, Mexican and Jamaican staples such as gambas tostada, mussels cooked with chorizo and jerk chicken. The restaurant also keeps an impressive selection of rum, tequila and mezcal behind its bar and uses these tasty liquors to make delicious, well-rounded cocktails.

5. TerraZin

This quirky establishment in Amsterdam-Centrum fuses together flavours from Japan and the Caribbean in order to make delicious vegan meals. There are several tasty signature dishes available inside the restaurant, including favourites like vegan burgers, seaweed salads and crispy spring rolls.
