Swedes love to read so much there’s even an annual Swedish book sale, where all bookshops offer great bargains at the same time. This means there are plenty of great bookstores to poke around all over the country—here are the best ones in Gothenburg.

Science Fiction Bokhandeln

With an incredibly knowledgeable staff, SF Bokhandeln is the go-to place for everything sci-fi. While there are plenty of books there are also movies, games, T.V. show sets, and plenty more, all of which are tested by the employees. Perfect for sci-fi lovers or anyone looking for something different.

Antikvariat Röde Orm

This secondhand bookshop is something of a legend, not just in Gothenburg, but well beyond. While you’ll find plenty of bestsellers, Röde Orm really shines when it comes to sourcing those hard to find titles that may be out of print or just difficult to get ahold of. The shop is happy to buy books as well, which might be just the ticket as you travel—sell something you’ve already read and pick up something new at the same time.

While you’ll find pretty much anything you could dream of here (or ask them to order it if you can’t), the shop specializes in art/design, crime, and classic novels. There is also a nice selection of art posters and postcards.

Utbildningsstaden

The focus might be textbooks, but there are plenty of other options here, with books in a variety of languages, such as English, French, German, and Spanish. The selection of classic novels is particularly good so perhaps this is the time to finally read Proust or the Russian greats.
