Llama Lloyd

Friends having coffee

This very local café is intimate—with just six bar seats, a table for two inside, and a nice collection of tables outside—and quite quirky. Customers arriving on bikes are given a 10% discount and nearly everything on offer is personally made by the owner. While you won’t find an espresso here, the coffee from Per Nordby is excellent.

Da Matteo

Da Matteo is the original specialty coffee shop in Gothenburg and since first opening in Victoriapassagen in 1995, they’ve expanded to multiple locations across the city. The company roasts their own coffee and bakes all breads and pastries; quality is the name of the game. The café is always buzzing, with both locals and tourists finding a home here.

Viktors Kaffe

Founded in 2012 due to the owners stated “weakness for coffee combined with interests in music, art, and interior design,” Viktor’s serves top quality coffee along with delicious sandwiches, pastries, soups, fresh juices, and other nibbles. That love of art is supported by a rotating exhibition on the walls and the music always sets a perfect mood.

Kafe Marmelad

This hipster hangout might be very chilled out but the coffee packs a punch. Breakfasts are excellent, and there is a great selection of salads and other nibbles, which can be enjoyed inside or out. Check the notice board for the latest cool gigs and exhibitions.

Rödasten Konsthall

A classic Swedish fika with kanelbullar (Swedish cinnamon buns)

If you like some great art with your fika, Röda Sten is the place for you. Rödasten Konsthall, located in an old industrial building on the edge of the river, is arguably Gothenburg’s coolest contemporary art gallery. It’s also where you’ll find a funky, cool, and excellent café that sells coffee, pastries, and some excellent vegetarian food, as well as a selection of wine and beer. The terrace at the back has some amazing views over the water.

Wiktor Ahlströms Konditori

This traditional café serves everything from its famous Cortina Cake (think marzipan and pistachio) to a range of other delectable pastries and some great salads, sandwiches, and light meals. It’s something of a local hangout that draws a very mixed crowd. A true Gothenburg original.

Rosenkaféet

It’s all right there in the name: Rosenkaféet literally means “Rose Café” and this summertime retreat is surrounded by a stunning garden of roses. The food is traditional, the cakes homemade, and only fresh, natural ingredients are used. It’s old-fashioned and something of a secret—until now.
