Seville, the largest city in southern Spain, is famous for its wonderful architecture and historical sites. This iconic aesthetic extends into many of the city’s best hotels, meaning that whatever your budget, you can stay in true Seville style.

Hotel Las Casas de El Arenal

Set on a cobbled, tree-lined lane in the centre of Seville, Las Casas de El Arenal combines two former homes dating from the 18th century – back when the city was a prosperous port. Much of the interior alludes to this era, with sumptuous fabrics, period furniture and antique etchings of old Seville. Modern tech takes the form of loaner tablets for guests, and why not upgrade to a room with a jacuzzi tub for a treat?

A pair of serene plant-filled courtyards with pillared arches offer a window into the 16th-century birth of the building. Moorish touches intermingle with more traditionally Spanish decor, adding to a sense of combined heritage that continues throughout the rooms. A location on the edge of the old town means easy access to numerous historical sites, including the nearby Casa de Pilatos, a beautiful palace with photogenic patios and gardens.

Crushed velvet couches, cut-glass chandeliers, gilt-framed artworks – when it comes to timeless elegance, Casa 1800 has it in spades. All this traditional refinement, however, is artfully balanced with contemporary style resulting in a superb marriage of the two. Set on the edge of the old Jewish quarter, this converted two-centuries-old mansion is also a mere amble from both the Real Alcázar and cathedral; views of the latter can be enjoyed from a sunny rooftop pool.

Hotel Casa de Colón

It’s very much a family affair at this converted 18th-century mansion, with members of the Pazos clan running every aspect of this boutique hotel. There’s a creative mélange of original features – busily patterned tiles; swirly wrought iron, scalloped windows – with modern touches and exotic flourishes providing an eclectic feel. You can opt to take breakfast on the cathedral-view terrace, or explore the myriad of options on your doorstep – the location could hardly be more central.

A rather sombre facade belies the fabulous abundance of light and colour within. A stained-glass skylight crowns a magnificently restored central space, while herringbone floors and contemporary design make guest rooms in which you’ll want to linger. A super-central setting puts Casco Antiguo on your doorstep and, if you’re visiting over the warmer seasons, be sure to hit the rooftop for a dip in the pool.
