There are few pleasures greater than sinking into a whirlpool tub after a hard day on the beach, or a deep tissue massage to relieve the stress of poolside lounging. And thankfully Tenerife has plenty of hotels where you don’t need to wander far to take advantage of some spa action. Here’s a selection of the best places on the island for some spa-based pampering.

Royal Garden Villas & Spa

The Royal Garden Villas simply ooze romantic exoticism, with a sumptuous combination of Asian-inspired decor, tinkling fountains, flower-filled hallways and objets d’art sourced from the four corners of the world. This small but very high-end complex has just 28 individually styled villas, finished in an opulent mix of rich fabrics and feng shui-arranged furnishings, each with its own pool. And the spa too really shines, offering free and unlimited access to thermal circuit with Jacuzzi, waterfall, and waterbeds, plus a Turkish bath, hydromassage showers and ice fountain.

Hard Rock Hotel Tenerife

The Tenerife outpost of the Hard Rock franchise wins the prize for the most unusual hotel spas in the island. Its Rock Spa is a 1,583 square metre, indoor-outdoor wellness space boasts views of the Atlantic Ocean, together with a collection of therapy pools and spa tubs, plus an ice room and the option of personalised music. The hotel’s Rock Om service offers an innovative (and unorthodox) fusion of music and yoga, while Body Rock fitness centre provides the latest gym equipment and high-energy exercise classes.

As its name suggests, this flamboyant Thai-inspired hotel is set in wonderful exotic gardens brimming with botanical specimens and other tropical flora, plus a carp pond and a resident black swan. And its Oriental Spa Garden is considered one of the best in Europe with innovative therapies that cover medical as well as relaxation and cosmetic treatments (which can be enjoyed alfresco). Facilities also include a large indoor pool, whirlpool tub, and spacious steam baths.

Gran Melia Palacio de Isora

This high-end Melia hotel is located overlooking the west coast of the island, and features some of the more palatial and opulent interiors you’re likely to find on Tenerife. There’s an impressive seven restaurants to choose from, and over 500 rooms offering suitably upscale comforts. The spa is also outstanding, offering luxury treatments with premium Clarins products, together with facilities such as heated therapy pools, sauna, and a range of showers from aromatherapy to thermal shock. Upgrade to the Red Level for extra perks and an adults-only zone.

Iberostar Grand Hotel Mencey

Certainly one of the swankiest places to stay on the island, this palatial fifties-era resort hotel has an impressive spa to match. Set over 4500 square metres, facilities include everything from a dynamic heated pool with bubble beds, whirlpool sections, and aqua-massage swan necks, to saunas, foot spa, and steam room. There’s even a flotation pool where you can experience zero gravity, and of course plenty of massage and beauty treatments available; it’s also an adults-only zone so serenity is guaranteed.

Meliá Hacienda del Conde

Another corker spa hotel from the Melia chain, this child-free boutique-style property is set in the quieter and unspoilt west of the island, albeit overlooking an 18-hole golf course. The look is traditional Canarian colonial and the vibe is distinctively relaxing, with tiered terraces and exotic gardens providing plenty of spots for peaceful seclusion. The spa is surprisingly well-equipped for a smaller hotel, with a long thermal circuit, sauna and steam rooms, foot-spa, and ice fountain, plus eight cabins offering a wide range of treatments.

The Ritz-Carlton, Abama

This five-star Ritz-Carlton property excels on most fronts, and its spa is no exception. The focus is on treatments rather than facilities, with a wonderful array of therapies, many using Tenerife-sourced produces. You can arrange a treatment in a lovely secluded garden, solo or as a couple, before soaking in a hydrotherapy pool or sweating it out in the steam room. The complex also offers a total of 10 restaurants (including a two Michelin-starred option) plus an impressive total of seven pools.
