Must-Visit Markets in Tenerife

Puerto de la Cruz has a biweekly market in the town’s mercado building and the surrounding streets. Here you can find food and drink from local farmers, antiques, chic clothes and all manner of household items. On the ground floor of the mercado building is typical farmers’ produce, including a dizzying array of fish, meat and fresh vegetables. The first floor on the other hand, is reserved for other items, such as Canarian handcrafted goods, ceramics, fabrics and accessories. The market is open on Wednesday and Saturday mornings from around 8.30am to 2pm (note than on Saturdays all 140 stalls are open, whereas Wednesdays tend to be quieter).

On the populous south west side of the island of Tenerife is Los Cristianos. One of the most popular resorts in the Canary Islands, this town boasts a large and bustling street market. Head over between 9am and 3pm on a Sunday or Tuesday and dive into the dizzying array of colourful stalls. Great second-hand bargains can be haggled over, for instance rare vinyl records, antiques and household decorations. Los Cristianos street market is set up on Los Cristianos beach, close to the Arona Gran Hotel.

Another of Tenerife’s best-known resorts, Costa Adeje attracts visitors from all over Europe and even further afield. Like Los Cristianos street market, Costa Adeje’s market is next to the sea but with close proximity to many of the town’s largest hotels. As such, the stalls are orientated towards their predominantly tourist customers, with souvenirs, handbags, casual fashion and other accessories abounding. Costa Adeje street market is held every Thursday and Saturday from 9am to 2pm next to both the El Duque shopping centre and the beach.

Unlike many markets, the one held at San Miguel de Abona prides itself on a commitment to both local produce and quality craftsmanship. Native cheeses, wines and honeys can be purchased from suppliers here, the ideal present for a relative back home. It is certainly worth a nosey to see what delicacies may wait in store for you amongst the vibrant stalls. San Miguel de Abona’s farmer’s market is open on Wednesdays from 4pm to 8pm and Saturdays and Sundays from 8am until 2pm.

Over 100 businesses operate from La Laguna’s market and all the stalls are equipped with electricity, hot and cold water and a phone line. Most of the market is indoors and, in short, it is an impressively modern establishment. The entrance is usually adorned by a superb flower display and vendors present their products in aesthetically pleasing arrangements. To attest to the success and popularity of this Tenerife market, it is open every day from 7am to 2pm.

If you are in the north of Tenerife over the weekend, make sure to visit Tacaronte’s farmers’ market, one of the largest in Tenerife. It sprawls across a large indoor site to give vendors and customers alike a respite from the summer heat. Much of the produce is grown locally, making the market the ideal stop-off point for a picnic or ingredients. Besides ripe fruit and vegetables you can also find quaint handicrafts and artisan cheeses. The market is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 8am to 2pm. The car park is quite small but there is further parking along the road.
