The Most Unique Experiences to Have in Ibiza

This fantastically beautiful seaside quarry, known as Atlantis, is one of Ibiza’s greatest hidden treasures. On the far western coast of the island sits this magnificent cliff excavation where the stones for the walls of Dalt Vila were recovered many centuries ago. The labyrinth of caves, rock formations and freshwater sea pools for swimming make for a wonderful afternoon under a blazing sun. The ascent here is challenging for most walkers, though the views over the endless water and across to the magical Es Vedrà rock make the journey well worth the effort.

Take to the water while bathed in the orange glow of a setting sun, and as night draws in, drift on a watery black mirror under the light of the moon and stars for an unforgettable evening. The Ascanio Surf School, located on the beautiful nature reserve of Parque Natural de Las Salinas, offers an atmospheric hour or two of kayaking in small groups every month during the full moon. Time your trip well, and you may also catch sight of one of Ibiza’s spectacular meteor showers – a spectacle best enjoyed in the winter months, due to the diminished light pollution on the island.

Step away from the crowds, and journey by foot along a rocky coastal path south of Cala Codolar to discover a stunning monument created by Australian artist Andrew Rodgers, called ‘Time and Space’. Locals speculate that the structure was commissioned by Cirque du Soleil’s founder, Guy Laliberté, in an attempt to guide UFOs to a luxury landing place. The tallest of the 13 basalt columns stands at 10 metres (33 feet) high and is gilded with 23-carat gold; all the stones are arranged in a circle similar to England’s very own Stonehenge. Approach the site at dusk for a truly magical moment as the columns change colour and the golden tip catches the last light of the setting sun. Also, of course, keep your eyes peeled for aliens.

Put on some slap and swerve the usual clubs for a unique and eventful evening away from the Ibizan ravers. Lio Ibiza offers a sophisticated gourmet dining experience with cabaret-style live entertainment featuring dancers, comedians and singers. After dinner, step outside with your cocktails for some fresh air on the terraces that feature perfect views of Dalt Vila, or hit the dance floor for a midnight boogie. Evenings here don’t come cheap, but that won’t come as much as a surprise on this Balearic island, so dig deep for some seriously raucous fun.

Although Ibiza is mostly famed for its sensational beaches, there is some impressive diving to be had in the waters, too. Guides will take experienced divers and novices alike out to some of the sweetest spots to explore around the Cala D’Hort Marine Nature Reserve, and with such knowledge at hand you are almost guaranteed to spot a whale or even a school of dolphins during the excursion.

Venture away from the hubbub of the usual bars and step into the foyer of the once-abandoned Teatro Pereyra, dating back to 1893. This charming time warp is often rammed to its stained wood rafters with revellers looking for something a little different. Nightly offerings of live jazz and blues music make for a fantastic atmosphere, and draw in a lively and artsy crowd, making it a great place for people watching, too.

Saddle up for a rustic ride through the wild northern region of Ibiza, a perfect and memorable way to explore the rugged countryside. Horse Valley is a stables on the outskirts of Ibiza Town that focuses on rescuing mistreated horses, and offers excursions for tourists in order to raise money for rehabilitating the animals. Choose from half-day experiences, lasting 4–5 hours and taking you through the mountains, or full-day journeys that end up on the beach. You can also brave the elements by joining a group for an overnight camping trip where you can snuggle up with the herd under a sky of stars.
