Largely defined by its busy port and thriving industrial economy, Gijón in the Asturias region might not be on your Spain bucket list. Look closer, however, and you’ll find plenty to change your mind. There’s the charming old fisherman’s quarter, pedestrianised shopping streets and a lively dining scene which all add to the city buzz – plus golden-sand beaches draw fun-seeking summer crowds. And if you fancy hotels with a little more character, there’s a great collection of boutique options, too – bookable with Culture Trip.

A pastel-pink, art deco facade sets the tone at this mid-range hotel, just steps from San Lorenzo Beach. Inside, the old-school vibe continues in the form of antique-style furnishings, gilt-framed mirrors and plenty of polished marble. Guest rooms are similarly traditional in style, with some upper level upgrades adding the bonus of sea views. A free breakfast is served up for guests every morning, though you might prefer the short stroll to the collection of charming cafes in the neighbouring Cimavilla district.

Guest rooms have a country-style charm, with plenty offering views over the pretty grounds, the neighbouring farmland and Gijón in the distance.

Suite 1907 Gijón

Suite Hotel

Suite 1907 draws its name from the handsome, early-20th-century building these luxury suites occupy. The block, close to bars and beaches in the city centre, has been updated with plenty of swish contemporary polish – each of the seven apartment-style rooms features colourful, modern decor and flashes of original exposed brickwork. Amenities are suitably upscale, with high-end kitchens perfect for self-caterers and longer stays. Splash out for the Deluxe Suite for a circular in-room jacuzzi.
