With a late-night culture, seductive culinary scene and voluptuous architecture, Barcelona has long been a popular destination for romantic getaways. For the perfect break for two, though, you’ll need your accommodation to be every bit as seductive as the city itself. Luckily, there’s a wealth of dreamy choices offering everything from rose-garnished beds to outdoor bathtubs. This luxury Marriott hotel is housed in a 19th-century building that once served as HQ for the Association of Cotton House Manufacturers. For a memorable romantic stay, book one of the opulent suites, which feature draped four-poster beds, vaulted ceilings with original frescoes, and balconies looking over Gran Via, one of the busiest streets in Barcelona. You’ll also have access to the neighbouring Mayan Spa for couples’ massages, and to a rooftop plunge pool with views of La Sagrada Familia.

2. H10 Art Gallery

In the smart Eixample neighbourhood, four-star H10 Art Gallery has two romantic spaces in which to relax: an intimate patio centred around a century-old olive tree and a rooftop terrace with a pool, loungers and a cocktail service. Each floor’s soundproofed, ensuite bedrooms take inspiration from artists such as Francis Bacon and Andy Warhol, and the hotel also has a notable collection of works by Joan Miro and Miquel Barcelo. A buffet breakfast is available for an additional fee.

3. Casa Bonay

Soulful boutique Casa Bonay offers rooms in a townhouse dating from 1869, in which original features such as mosaic floors and sliding doors have been carefully preserved. Accommodations in the Catalan capital don’t come much sexier than the courtyard doubles with large terraces, which feature secluded patios with outdoor showers and hammocks. Enjoy tapas and beers on the roof, or head to the Libertine bar for cocktails and live DJs. The Bodega Bonay restaurant showcases the finest Catalan wines and produce.

4. El Palace

First opened as Barcelona’s Ritz in 1919, El Palace still guarantees one of the most extravagant stays in the Catalan capital. Wow your loved one with the Romantic Package, which includes a welcome gift of cava, chocolates and flowers in a room or suite of your choice, late check-out and dinner-for-two with champagne at L’Eclair, a Catalan–French restaurant in the ornate main hall. Afterwards, waltz over to sultry speakeasy El Bluesman, or a flower-filled rooftop overlooking Eixample.

Roca offers vintage accommodations across two historic buildings in the heart of Eixample. Couples will love the deluxe doubles or the studios, all of which have intimate terraces or balconies, retro furniture and Magic-Eye-style mosaic floors (the studios also have kitchenettes). Breakfast, drinks and snacks are served in a ground-floor lounge decorated with mid-century furniture and more hypnotic tile work. La Rambla and the Boqueria Market, two of the most famous attractions in Barcelona, are both about a 20-minute walk away.

6. Hotel 1898

Built in 1880 and named after the year in which Spain lost the last two outposts of its empire, Cuba and the Philippines, this is the only hotel on La Rambla with a thermal water circuit and indoor pool (the luxury spa occupies the building’s former coal cellars). La Isabela roof terrace is one of the most romantic spots in the city at sunset, offering highly photogenic views, innovative cocktails, tapas and chilled music. The Superior Rooms and Colonial Suites look directly onto La Rambla.

7. Duquesa de Cardona

One of the only boutique hotels in the up-and-coming neighbourhood of Poble-Sec, Hotel Brummel is a cosmopolitan, modern retreat that offers casual luxury, with less bling and more soul. The décor is cool, unique and contemporary and there are only 20 rooms in this 19th-century property, meaning the staff will have absolutely no problem remembering just how you like your coffee. Cool down with a dip in the outdoor pool and grab a cocktail in the downstairs lobby before heading out to explore this foodie neighbourhood.

14. Soho House Barcelona

Possibly one of the coolest hangouts in the city, Soho House Barcelona is a private members’ club and hotel that opened in 2016 and has fast become the hottest place to be seen in town. Located next to the Marina Port Vell, the rooftop terrace offers unobstructed views of the harbour for when you’re splashing around in the pool or sipping a cocktail in the sun. The rooms all have their own eclectic style, with vintage furniture and designer pieces creating a homely atmosphere.

15. The Wittmore

This sophisticated accommodation has a distinctly British feel, with a décor halfway between that of a posh men’s club and a trendy London cocktail bar.
