The Navarran capital of Pamplona makes for a great city break at any time of year, particularly in July during the San Fermín Festival. 1. Pamplona Catedral Hotel

The Pamplona Catedral Hotelis a four-star hotel located in Pamplona’s Old Town, next to the Portal de Francia – the entrance for pilgrims journeying along the Camino de Santiago – and the Catedral de Santa María la Real. It’s housed in an old converted convent, yet inside it’s modern, contemporary and graceful. Housed in an 18th-century palace, the Hotel Palacio Guendulain is one of the most beautiful buildings in Pamplona. In 1845 Queen Isabel II even stayed here, briefly turning it into a royal residence. With just 25 rooms, it is filled with sumptuous elements such as chandeliers and grand staircases. There’s also an elegant bar on the terrace and a gourmet restaurant.

The five-star Gran Hotel La Perla is one of the most elegant and luxurious hotels in the city. Choose to stay here and you’ll be in good company with the likes of Ernest Hemingway, Orson Welles and Charlie Chaplin having been guests here in the past. Its rooms are even inspired by them – imagine staying in the Ernest Hemingway room in the city that meant so much to the author. Completely remodelled in 2007, its 44 rooms look out on either the famous Calle Estafeta or the Plaza del Castillo, so it’s a perfect place to stay during the San Fermín Festival (Running of the Bulls).

The Muga de Beloso – Alma Pamplona is located on the outskirts of the city in a grand contemporary building, surrounded by parkland, trees and gardens. Its rooms have a very modern feel with lots of wood and tiles, neutral black and white shades, and large floor-to-ceiling windows, which seem to bring the outdoors, in. The hotel was completely renovated in 2015 and has 213 rooms with beautiful vistas of the surrounding parks. Its interior decor is stylish and simple with light colours of white and beige, and polished wooden floors. As well as meeting rooms and a casual cafe for evening drinks, there’s the Restaurante Gayarre, serving everything from tapas to pizzas, sandwiches and burgers.
