Spain, with its incredible landscapes and year-round sunshine, is the ideal location for a rejuvenating retreat, which is why so many spas and wellness centres call the country home. From fitness bootcamps and yoga retreats to luxury spas, we discover the best places to recharge your batteries in Spain.

Yogarosa Retreat, Ibiza

Far removed from the hedonistic and alcohol-fuelled image of Spain’s party isle is the tranquil and rejuvenating yoga retreat run by Austrian-born Rosa Klein. After a life-changing car accident and a year of recovery, Klein discovered the healing powers of yoga and shares the benefits in her easygoing and inclusive yoga practice, which is especially aimed at those living with, or recovering from, injury or illness. The exercises are gentle and suitable for beginners. The retreat is set in a beautiful building, with two guesthouses, an outdoor yoga platform and two swimming pools, surrounded by pine forest. The retreat’s bountiful vegetable patch supplies food for the delicious vegan and vegetarian meals. Additional activities include horse riding on the beach, free diving and energising Thai and Reiki massages.

SHA Wellness Clinic

If you are looking for a more hardcore wellness experience then the SHA Wellness Clinic, on the Mediterranean coast near Altea, has a range of specially-designed programmes, from Anti-Stress and Wellness to Weight Control and Rejuvenation. The SHA method combines the most effective natural therapies with therapeutic nutrition and the latest developments in anti-ageing technology. Guests can choose from a 7-day or 14-day treatment option. The spa is popular with the A-list, including supermodels and even Russian President Vladimir Putin is rumoured to have enjoyed a detox.

Oceano, Tenerife

Another hardcore wellness retreat is the Oceano health spa, in the picturesque north of Tenerife, a tranquil spot far from the Canary Island’s hectic tourist resorts. The retreat offers a range of different therapies, including Thalasso therapy. Coming from the Greek ‘thalassa’, meaning sea, the treatment focuses on the rejuvenation of the body using various sea elements, from salt water and sea air, to seaweed and salts. Oceano also offers a detox following the F. X. Mayr. method, which teaches that the intestine is the foundation of good health. The detox includes a light diet and various therapeutic treatments aimed at balancing and reinvigorating the body.

Marbella Club

For some people, recharging batteries is as much about giving the body a boost of intense activity and action as it is about lazing on a sun lounger and doing nothing. Marbella Club, a luxury historic hotel on Spain’s south coast founded in the 1940s, has a range of wellness programmes with a particular focus on fitness. The club’s personal trainers will design tailor-made programmes, whether you’re a newbie to exercise or a seasoned gym bunny. After completing some gruelling outdoor activities or a hard session in the gym, you can relax with some treatments at the club’s spa.

Shanti-Som, Malaga

You don’t have to trek all the way to India or Thailand for a relaxing yoga-infused break. This Asian-style spa offers revitalising yoga retreats near in the mountains just outside Marbella, on Spain’s southern coast. Choose from Yoga, Pilates, Detox and Weight Loss retreats, tailored to the areas you specifically want to work on. For those who want more action than relaxation, opt for the Fitness High Intensity retreat, which teaches guests how to have a healthier lifestyle through exercise and diet.

Cugó Gran, Menorca

Head to the 250-acre estate of Cugó Gran on the picturesque Balearic Island of Menorca if you fancy a ‘gut makeover’. The much maligned organ can affect everything from physical health to emotional and mental well-being, so is well worth taking the time to understand. The retreats are inspired by The Gut Makeover, an eating plan designed for optimal digestive health that can improve everything from weight loss to anxiety. The retreat is led by the book’s author, nutritionist Jeannette Hyde, while guests will also enjoy daily massages and pilates practice.
