When it comes to fashion, Spain is best known for the likes of high-street giants Zara, Massimo Dutti and Mango. Yet, whether it’s for vintage-inspired evening gowns or easy-to-wear men’s clothing, these fashion designers from Barcelona are also worth knowing.

Rebel Root

Founded in 2012 by the Catalan Eva Riu who had previously attended Central St Martins in London, Rebel Root is an ethical fashion brand for men and women. Each garment is Fair Trade-guaranteed and the brand helps promote and protect traditional methods of production. Don’t try looking for Rebel Root on the high-street though – it’s currently an exclusively online store.

Ivori

Ivori is a fashion brand but also a boutique in Barcelona where you can find a selection of clothes and accessories 100% designed in Catalonia. Ivori’s own collection is playful and fresh – a reflection of the Barcelona spirit and Mediterranean lifestyle – and draws inspiration from vintage and retro fashion.

Oscar H. Grand

This young Spaniard has made a name for himself as a skilled tailor, specialising in men’s suits and accessories. Oscar H. Grandworks from an old workshop located in the backstreets of El Born, surrounded by fellow artisans and artists. His collection includes not only suits but also more casual, modern clothing such as overalls, shirts and jackets.

Ailanto

Born in Bilbao, brothers Iñaki and Aitor Muñoz moved to Barcelona to study fashion before setting up their Ailanto brand in the late nineties. Since then, their women’s wear has been shown at the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in Madrid and the brand has opened two stores: one in Barcelona and one in Madrid.

Natalie Capell

Drawing on both her Israeli and Spanish heritage, Natalie Capell chose Barcelona to set up her first workshop. Here she produces sophisticated women’s fashion which is inspired by the 1920s, rich in lace, velvet and intricate detail. Her collection includes elegant evening gowns and sumptuous wedding dresses.

Petit Comité

This Barcelona fashion brand describes itself as casual chic, playing with comfortable, noble fabrics and simple but elegant cuts to create easy-to-wear contemporary fashion. Founded by two Barcelona fashion students in 2012, Petit Comitésells its garments in a handful of artisan boutiques in Barcelona and Switzerland.

Zazo & Brull

Xavier Zazo and Clara Brull are the two masterminds behind this Barcelona-based studio which has already had shows in Paris, Amsterdam, Tokyo and Brazil and been featured in Vogue UK. Zazo & Brull‘s avant-garde women’s wear is characterised by contrasting fabrics, unique patterns and a sense of both adventure and romanticism.
