The 10 Best Restaurants in Vračar, Belgrade
Vračar is the smallest neighbourhood in Belgrade, but the old adage that good things come in small packages has never been more true. The hugely popular district is home to some of the best restaurants in town, from traditional kafanas to ultra-contemporary bistros.
Terminal
Bar, Bistro, Cocktail Bar, Restaurant, Contemporary, European, Asian
The Church of St. Sava is arguably the most iconic attraction in Belgrade, so any restaurant looking out at the temple has something of a head start. Terminal makes the most of this, with an impressive menu of international cuisine sitting alongside cocktails and other refreshing drinks. You won’t find any pljeskavica on the menu here, but you will find plenty of stylish patrons and a fantastic time.
Pivo i Kobaja
Restaurant, Bar, Contemporary, European
We are big fans of restaurants that leave you in no doubt as to what to expect, and that is a fairly good way to sum up the majestically named Pivo i Kobaja. The name translates as ‘Beer and Sausage’, and that is exactly what you will find on the menu at this Vračar spot. The atmosphere is decidedly Bavarian, although the great view of the Church of St. Sava gives the whole thing another dimension. The waiters will bring you a menu, but you are having beer and sausages. The only question is how much.
Lovac
Restaurant, European
Vračar’s Lovac restaurant lives up to its name, as the hunting trophies of yesteryear flood the many walls. If you aren’t a fan of eating a meaty meal with the skull of a deer above then this isn’t for you, but those looking to be transported back to simpler times will be in their element. There are rifles on the walls and plenty of different meats on the menu, although special attention should be paid to the ćumur na stole (Charcoal on the table), a two-person mixed plate served with your own charcoal grill.
Orašac
Restaurant, European
There are many famous restaurants in Belgrade, and Orašac is one such place that people flock to from all over the world. Tradition is king here, and you’ll struggle to find better authentic Serbian food anywhere else in the capital. The atmosphere is almost as engaging as the food, although there are only so many times you can listen to a moving group of local musicians play the same love songs over and over. Best to concentrate on the food, which is legitimately remarkable.
Super Donkey
Bistro, Restaurant, Vegan, Vegetarian
Don’t be alarmed, this isn’t a restaurant offering Eeyore and friends cooked in a variety of ways. Super Donkey is a million miles from that actually. This little eatery on Krunska is another excellent vegetarian option in Belgrade, offering colourful and vibrant food that is as engaging as it is toothsome. The salads might be the best option. If you’re shaking your head at the idea of a salad as a meal, you clearly haven’t discovered Super Donkey yet.
Mala Fabrika Ukusa
Restaurant, Contemporary, European
Marenda
Bistro, Restaurant, Contemporary, Mediterranean
A little bistro not too far from the Church of St. Sava, Marenda is all about enjoying the simpler things in life. Everything here aims to please, from the food to the drinks and service and more. It offers a fine line in breakfasts and sandwiches, along with some excellent grilled meat and fish dishes. There is even plenty of choice for vegetarians, making this an all-round great option in Vračar.
Pizzeria Amici
Pizzeria, Restaurant, Italian, Mediterranean
Is it the best pizzeria in Vračar? That is for you to decide, but Amici absolutely has to be in the argument. Located near to Karadjordjev’s Park, the soul of old Italian restaurants comes alive here, albeit with an undeniably Serbian twist. Wood, stone and brick are king when it comes to decor, but taste absolutely dominates on the plate.
Intergalactic Diner
Restaurant, Diner, American
We were always a little bit reticent about making the trip here (as much because of the concept as our own experiences at the Hotel Jugoslavija venue), but we’re glad we eventually took the plunge. American-style anything is a genuine Marmite topic in Serbia, but this Vračar diner has well and truly thrived in the years since its opening. Great burgers, salty fries, excellent milkshakes and crispy onion rings abound, with waiters on roller skates the only thing missing.
New York New York
Bistro, Restaurant, Italian, Mediterranean
Sticking with the American theme, New York New York has been a Vračar staple since 1991. The name is pretty much the be all and end all of the US elements, as the menu has its sights set firmly on all things Mediterranean. With a splendid terrace and plenty of flavour on offer, there is no reason this restaurant can’t continue attracting customers for another 30 years and more.
