A major draw of Timișoara, a great city-break destination with plenty of cultural and historic attractions, is the laid-back vibe – its bars and rooftops being the best place to experience it alongside the locals. Here are the best bars of the capital of Romania’s Banat region, and set to be Europe’s Capital of Culture in 2021.

Bierhaus

Bar, Craft Ale Bar, Pub Grub

One of the oldest bars in Timișoara is Bierhaus; it’s that go-to place where every beer lover in town has had at least one beer. The first tried and tested option on every local’s list, Bierhaus is the place to meet and greet the locals while sampling their large and well-curated selection of European and Romanian beers. Best time to visit? At weekends, when the house is packed, there’s music in the basement, and all you need to do is join in the fun. If planning a group visit, make sure to book a table as they get snapped up quickly.

Cuib d'Arte

Bar, Tapas

Is it a bar, a café, tea house, someone’s living room, or even bedroom? Ask any of the patrons and they will inevitably answer it is any one or all of those. Bottom line, this space, found at the top of a flight of stairs from Aethernativ, a venue equally well versed in role-playing, should be defined by the way it makes you feel. Located in the city centre, this affordable and laid-back space was designed for the young and rebel at heart, so if you empathise, do pay them a visit.

Atelier Beeroteka

Atelier Beeroteka brings to Timișoara – a city with an affinity for German culture and a large historic community of Germans – a large and varied selection of beers from all over Germany. Your head will spin at the number of beers – 105 in total – handpicked and imported by the owner. Although many of them come from Bavaria, the focus is on showcasing small breweries that are passionate for their craft. Try the Schneider Aventinus Weizen-Eisbock, Tegernsee and Wolferstetter, alongside the popular Paulaner and Augustiner, served alongside light snacks, and soon fresh dishes from Atelier’s own kitchen.

Jarvis

When opening Jarvis (a pub named after the island of the same name in the Pacific Ocean), the owners vowed to make the best ribs in Europe. And that’s a claim they are since doing their best to live up to, with every single order. Apart from their famous ribs, the other star attraction on the menu is the goulash, followed by salads, their little starlets. Their list of drinks is varied, and cocktails are a must-try. If you visit Jarvis on weekdays, a reservation is not mandatory, but on weekends booking a table is a must.

The Scottish Pub

Nightclub, Romanian, Wine, Beer, Cocktails

Another winning bet, part of a popular and successful concept in the city – that of pubs serving consistently good food and keeping a friendly, open atmosphere – is The Scottish Pub. Having started as a small and intimate venue, it has evolved, by popular demand, into a bigger one that has a passion for the tradition of live music and big, lively parties. A place for all (legal drinking) ages, it boasts a well-curated list of drinks, from speciality beers to single malt labels.

Bugar'd Pub

Pub, Romanian, European, Wine, Beer

Serving hearty, traditional Romanian dishes reinvented by their creative chef, Bugard’s Pub has over 50 beers on the menu. But the biggest draw, locals say, is the party atmosphere that kicks off on weekends. What sets them apart from other pubs in Timișoara, inspired mainly by other exciting beer cultures, is the fact that here you can sample locally-brewed craft beer, Terapia.

Molly Malone

Pub, Nightclub, Wine, Beer, Cocktails

The legend of Molly Malone has reached wide and far, and in Timișoara has made a case for partying until late for years now. Located in the heart of the city, Molly Malone is a pub and a club and the place to meet the city’s young and hip crowds. It serves all types of drinks one can expect from an Irish pub, plus a great selection of cocktails designed around beer.

The 80's Pub

Pub, Bar, Pub Grub

Visit The 80’s Pub in the summer and you will find yourself immersed in a green oasis where drinks are cold and the vibe welcoming. Serving a great selection of single-malt labels, as well as 100+ beers from all over the world, it regularly hosts live concerts by local artists.
