Settled by the Germans in the 12th century, Sibiu soon became the wealthiest of the seven walled citadels in Romania. Today known as the City with Eyes thanks to its iconic roof dormers, here you’ll find fairytale-esque towers, an annual Christmas market and even a Bridge of Lies. Rewind time in one of Transylvania’s medieval Saxon cities, and book one of these hotels in Sibiu for your next trip.

On an alleyway just off Strada Constituției, you’ll find this five-star boutique hideaway which opened in 2017. Inside, there are six double rooms, three apartment units, and a single room for solo travellers. Despite its intimate size, the hotel is chock full of amenities, with an art gallery (the owner’s passion project), restaurant, gym, spa, and meeting room.

Budget travellers will appreciate a stay at the B13 Hostel. Even though it’s in a 1946 building, originally meant to house a telephone provider (some say it looks like New York City’s Metropolitan Club), this hostel has super modern amenities. Sandwiched right in the middle of Old Town, it takes a modern twist on communal living, with six- to 20-person dorms, and conveniences like laundry, lockers, and access to tea and coffee, plus a terrace. If your stomach is growling, head down to the Burger Bar 2.0.

Nearby, you’ll find the Natural History Museum Garden, Corpses Gate, and State Philharmonic Sibiu’s Thalia Concert Hall. In short, no planning needed when you stay here – simply wander outside and let the best of Sibiu speak to you. Rooms are simple and include breakfast each morning.

All that glitters just might be gold at this property right on Piața Aurarilor (Goldsmith’s Market). Rooms here are notably spacious – from the 40sqm (131sqft) studio to 70sqm (230sqft) apartment, which includes its own private entrance. The building itself is a relic of bygone times with medieval touches and an August Sporner engraving from 1883.

5. Plaza 35

Perched on the edge of Piața Aurel Vlaicu is this contemporary aparthotel with 32 studios and apartments, each with a kitchenette and desk for business travellers. While the appeal of the locale is in the hustle of the piazza, it’s just a 10-minute walk to the forested Parcul Sub Arini.

6. Yellow Boot Aparthotel

This Yellow Boot location was made for walking – after all, it’s an easy stroll to the Council Tower, Bridge of Lies, Chibin Square, and Brukenthal Museum. But what makes this aparthotel so joyful is its pleasantly chic design and heated marble floors in the bathrooms. Additionally, the breakfast offerings are stocked with Transylvania products, including fresh milk from the Carpathian pastures.

Just south of the Bürger Gate, this home was built in 1472, and remains the tallest house on Ocnei Street with an impressive 60-degree angled roof. Despite its historic roots, the interior is a modern-day delight with five apartments, each with its own private entrance and in-unit laundry washing machine and dryer.

8. Art Hotel

The artfulness starts with the location: just off the arch-shaped Strada Alexandru Odobescu, where a staircase connects the two sections of Sibiu’s Old Town. Once inside the four-star hotel, every turn has a new, unusual artwork to digest. The 27 rooms are decked out with patterned carpets and wood-clad walls. Rent a fun yellow Fiat 500 from the front desk to explore the surrounding area, before returning for dinner at the on-site restaurant, Pablo.
