Settled by the Germans in the 12th century, Sibiu soon became the wealthiest of the seven walled citadels in Romania. Today known as the City with Eyes thanks to its iconic roof dormers, here you’ll find fairytale-esque towers, an annual Christmas market and even a Bridge of Lies. Rewind time in one of Transylvania’s medieval Saxon cities, and book one of these hotels in Sibiu for your next trip.

Budget travellers will appreciate a stay at the B13 Hostel. Even though it’s in a 1946 building, originally meant to house a telephone provider (some say it looks like New York City’s Metropolitan Club), this hostel has super modern amenities. Sandwiched right in the middle of Old Town, it takes a modern twist on communal living, with six- to 20-person dorms, and conveniences like laundry, lockers, and access to tea and coffee, plus a terrace. If your stomach is growling, head down to the Burger Bar 2.0.

This Yellow Boot location was made for walking – after all, it’s an easy stroll to the Council Tower, Bridge of Lies, Chibin Square, and Brukenthal Museum. Additionally, the breakfast offerings are stocked with Transylvania products, including fresh milk from the Carpathian pastures.

Once inside the four-star hotel, every turn has a new, unusual artwork to digest. The 27 rooms are decked out with patterned carpets and wood-clad walls. Rent a fun yellow Fiat 500 from the front desk to explore the surrounding area, before returning for dinner at the on-site restaurant, Pablo.
