A perfect destination for romantics, dreamers and art lovers alike, Sibiu is a gem of Romania, selected by Forbes Magazine in 2008 as one of ‘Europe’s Most Idyllic Places to Live’. The soothing atmosphere is ideal for those wanting to spend a whimsical weekend hideaway in a historic setting. Boasting spectacular baroque architecture, chic hotels, cosy restaurants and lovely cafes, this is a place to explore, enjoy, relax and get some spark back into your relationship.

Day 1

Begin your weekend by exploring Sibiu’s historical centre together. Picturesque streets with beautiful, colourful buildings take you towards the marvellous Big Square. Surrounded by gorgeous Baroque and Renaissance dwellings, take a moment to capture the beauty around you. If you are passionate about art or just want to immerse into an artistic experience, visit the Brukenthal National Museum‘s European Art Gallery.

Located in a stunning 18th-century baroque building, the former house of the nobleman Samuel Von Brukenthal, the museum’s interiors will take you back to the 18th- and 19th-century atmosphere through several rooms adorned with sophisticated decorations. Next to it, inside the charming Blue House, the national art is exhibited in the Romanian Art Gallery, through more than 200 paintings, a must-see for those who want to discover local works.

Continue exploring Sibiu’s old centre and take a tour of its captivating little squares: the Small Square and the Huet Square. Rising monumentally in the Huet Square is the Evangelical Church, a magnificent gothic monument that during summer lures locals and travellers to its mesmerizing organ concerts. Go around the church, as just behind lies a small terrace with a beautiful view of the lower city and the thick walls of the old medieval citadel of Sibiu.

A few steps away is the Little Square, but to get there, you will have to cross the Lies Bridge, a medieval lie detector that shatters every time a lie is told by a passer-by. A good opportunity to test your lover’s honesty. As if the Lies Bridge was not enough, Sibiu’s eyes are staring right at you. Little windows on the housetop, the eye-shaped skylights are known as ‘Sibiu’s Eyes’.

For a great meal, head to Kulinarium restaurant in the Small Square. Wonderful food and wine, including Romanian specialities, will delight your tastebuds. Enjoy your meal, the enticing atmosphere and the view over the Council Tower, one of the main landmarks of the city. If you love panoramic views, go up to the tower’s terrace for an awe-inspiring view of Sibiu. What can be more romantic than taking in plenty of views of the enchanting city with your partner and discovering the world together?

For the evening, book a room at Hilton Hotel and spoil yourself with a restful spa session and massage-for-two in a quiet atmosphere, where your senses will be delighted and your body relaxed.

Day two

After a soothing evening and a hearty breakfast at the hotel, enjoy your romantic escape’s second day in Sibiu at the ASTRA Folk Museum in Dumbrava Sibiului. Wander through the museum’s meadows and discover the traditional architecture in Romania’s biggest open-air museum. The wide open space is perfect if you love long holding-hands walks. The museum features a big lake where you can take lovely boat rides. As cliché as it may seem, it can be a great laidback moment that you spend together, in the middle of nature. For lunch, you can either have a picnic or a hearty meal at Jacob Grill House‘s terrace.

For a more fancy experience, go at the Brukenthal Palace in Avrig, once called ‘Transylvania’s Garden of Eden. The palace is situated 20-kilometres (12-miles) from Sibiu. To get there, you can either rent a car or book a transfer operated by the palace.

What used to be the former summer residence of the Brukenthal baron is today a mesmerizing location featuring the only Baroque Park in Transylvania and an 18th-century orangery, which today is a guest house with a glamorous restaurant. Take pleasure in tasting the delicious dishes prepared with care and great attention to detail, while having a wonderful view over the gardens, all in a romantic ambience. Don’t miss the fabulous papanasi – sweet dumplings for dessert, the speciality of the restaurant. If you want to take home some of the local flavours, you can buy organic homemade products like jams and syrups on the spot.

For the last evening of your romantic weekend, return to Sibiu to enjoy a walk on its streets, without missing a promenade on ‘the most beautiful street in Sibiu’ – Cetatii Street, and a mouth-watering dinner at Pardon Bistro. The friendly staff will warmly welcome you and serve up unique dishes; the ingredients of a great evening spent with your lover in the unspoiled city.
