From traditional Polish restaurants, to bagel stands to sausage-laden Slavic platters doused in cheese, the breakfast and brunch offerings in Kraków – Poland’s second biggest city and culture hub – rarely fail to impress. Here is a rundown of some of the top spots for a bite to eat from early morning until mid afternoon in this vibrant and historic city.

1. Sąsiedzi

Restaurant, Polish

A rustic design and traditional Polish theme make Sąsiedzi one extraordinary restaurant. The brick interior and the wooden furniture covered with handmade table cloths bring out the earthy, simple customs of the Polish country, while the menu is abundant in meat dishes. For vegetarians, there is a great porcini mushroom soup served in a bread bowl; for meat eaters there are great duck, chicken, goose, and veal options. The only real downside is that it doesn’t usually open until noon, so an early lunch or late brunch beckons.

2. Alchemia od Kuchni

Gastropub, Vegan, Vegetarian, Middle Eastern, Pub Grub

Boasting a minimalist, modern interior, Alchemia is a perfect place to brunch in Krakow. Inspired by various types of cuisine – American, vegan, veggie, and Middle Eastern – Alchemia’s menu is quite complex, with juicy burgers, soups, snacks, and street food to boot. The breakfast menu is based primarily on egg recipes. If in doubt try the stacked halloumi burger, then pop into one of the city’s most iconic bars, located next door, for a Czech beer.

3. Loza Café

Cafe, Cocktails

Loza Café is located in the heart of Krakow’s Old Town, with a spectacular view of the historical square at its center. The menu is classic, loaded with paninis, salads, lasagnas, and grilled chicken. The cake slices and ice creams bring a sweet option to the table, while the cocktails make for something of a stronger treat.

4. Frankie’s

Juice Bar, Healthy

Fresh and simple, Frankie’s is the embodiment of the brunch joint. Famous for its smoothies, there’s a concoction here for everyone – and especially for those who want to quell their Krakow hangovers from the night before. The summer menu consists of numerous healthy meals, loaded with salmon, avocado, sun-dried tomatoes, spinach, apples and honey mustard to name just a few of their favoured ingredients.

5. Dynia

Restaurant, Italian

Dynia restaurant is a delightful place to enjoy any meal – not just breakfast or brunch. The overall atmosphere is classy and creative, due to the contrasting rustic and neo-Art Nouveau décor, not to mention the crowd of young professionals who frequent the place. True to its name (which means “pumpkin” in Polish), the menu offers a host of pumpkin-inspired dishes, while the spicy spinach-come-chilli pasta and range of veggie sandwiches add a little variation.

6. Pub Wręga

Gastropub, Polish, Pub Grub

Boasting a beautiful garden with a delightful, ivy-covered entrance, Pub Wręga is hidden in the narrow streets of Kazimierz. Generous traditional recipes are the backbone of the menu, with everything from vegetarian pierogi (Polish dumplings) with cabbage and mushrooms to pancakes with spinach and cheese on offer. Delicious, fruity cocktails make the drinks stand out, with flavours like strawberry, blueberries and banana-walnut making them a perfect treat for those with a sweet tooth.

7. Moment Resto Bar

Restaurant, Bar, Polish

The rich offer of generous brunches at Moment Resto Bar includes delicious crispy croissants, brie cheese on French toast with eggs and fresh tomatoes, crusty wholewheat bread, smoked salmon salads with avocado, and much more. The drinks range from black tea to freshly-pressed lemonade, while its location in the heart of Kazimierz means it’s a fine spot for fueling up before heading out to explore the historic streets of the town.

8. Bagelmama

Cafe, Vegetarian, Healthy

This small but charming joint makes bagels look like works of art. Each bun comes in delicious flavours of sesame, garlic or cinnamon, while toppings range from chocolate and banana, to juicy burgers with fresh salad. Other favourites include onion rings, peanut butter and jam, salmon, and more than five different types of hummus. In short, Bagelmama knows what a great brunch looks like!

9. Café Camelot

Cafe, Israeli, Italian

Zeitgeist design and a fine location contribute to the allure of petite and stylish Café Camelot. Set in the middle of Krakow’s Old Town, this café’s food philosophy is all about coffee, cake variations, and uber-fresh salads that are healthy and tasty. Take a seat by the window, overlooking bustling Tomasza Street, for an afternoon of people watching.

10. Milkbar Tomasza

No list of breakfast and brunch spots should neglect one of Poland’s most famous eating experiences – a meal at a “Bar Mleczny” (Milk Bar). Here in the Old Town of Kraków amid the hustle and bustle, you can find the extremely well-priced Milkbar Tomasza. From the outside it looks so basic, and that’s the beauty of it. Once inside, delicious fresh Polish food is served in style, or at least in the style every Milk Bar should aspire to. The other incredible point to note about Tomasza is that it is a mere five-minute walk to the heart of Kraków – Cloth Hall and the Rynek (main square).
