LITERATURE | International Storytelling Festival

As its name suggests, this week long literature festival revolves around written and oral storytelling. Events will take place in venues throughout Amsterdam and many international raconteurs are set to appear.

FILM | De Bounce Urban Film Festival

📅 Wednesday November 1st to Sunday November 5th
There will be over twenty movie screenings at the fourth edition of Amsterdam-Zuidoost’s de Bounce Urban Film Festival. This year the festival has tailored its program around four important topics: racism, women’s empowerment, diversity in films and LGBTQ acceptance in urban culture.

ART | Mathhijs Maris

📅 Until Sunday January 7th
The Rijksmuseum will present around 70 artworks created by 19th century Dutch painter Mathhijs Maris this winter. Although Maris was originally associated with the Hague School, his style developed in unique directions and his work inspired many other contemporary figures including Vincent van Gogh.

ART | Dutch Masters from the Hermitage Treasures of the Tsars

📅 Until Sunday May 27th
The Hermitage Museum Amsterdam will unveil 63 Dutch Golden Age portraits in its Nieuwe Keizersgracht wing this November. These paintings are part of the St. Petersburg collection which is usually housed in the State Hermitage in Russia and have never before been displayed together in the Netherlands.

CULTURE | Museum Night

During this annual night time event, almost every museum in Amsterdam keeps its doors open well after regular hours and organises special exhibitions, tours or parties.

ART | Keith Haring Returns to the Stedelijk

📅 From Thursday October 12th

In 1986, Keith Haring created an enormous light-filtering artwork for the Stedelijk which was then mounted onto the ceiling of the museum’s Grand Hallway. This artwork will be reinstalled in its original place in October 2017 and remain on display throughout November.

MUSIC | Princess Nokia

📅 Thursday November 9th

New York City’s trailblazer Princess Nokia will perform at Melkweg this November almost a year after playing a sold-out show at the same venue. Princess Nokia’s strain of alternative hip hop draws from many musical and cultural vocabularies including trap, 1990s nostalgia and Taíno spirituality.

FOOD & DRINK | Workshop: Yeast Hunting

📅 Sunday November 12th

During this workshop, participants will learn the basics of yeast production and discover how to catch, then grow their own cultures. Several experts will guide the course including three local craft brewers.

DANCE | Belgium Rules

📅 Tuesday November 7th and Wednesday November 8th

This new dance piece by Belgian maestro Jan Fabre simultaneously glorifies and satires Belgium and the country’s way of life, taking aim at its national obsessions, neuroses and morals. The production will be performed at Amsterdam’s city theater de Stadsschouwburg.

MUSIC | Le Guess Who?

📅 Thursday November 9th to Sunday November 12th

Although Le Guess Who? actually takes place in Utrecht rather than Amsterdam, the former city is only forty minutes away from the Dutch capital via public transport. Furthermore, Le Guess Who? easily ranks among the biggest and best alternative music festival in Europe and always features from a wide range of genres including indie, hip hop and EDM.

DANCE | Nederlands Ballet Gala

📅 Monday November 13th

Basically every major Dutch dance company will perform at this gala and the evening’s program includes pieces from Nederlands Dans Theater 2, Het Nationale Ballet and Scapino Ballet Rotterdam. There will also be solo performances from several groundbreaking dancers such as Igone de Jongh and Marijn Rademakers Van Manens.

FILM | International Documentary Filmfestival Amsterdam

📅 Wednesday November 15th to Sunday November 26th
Amsterdam’s annual documentary film festival is the largest event of its type in the world and has taken place every November in the city since 1988. Many of Amsterdam’s most famous cinemas screen films during the festival including Pathé Tushinski and the Eye Fillmuseum.

CULTURE | Turn on the Lights

📅 Thursday November 16th
In mid-November every year, Amsterdam’s most famous department store, de Bijenkorf, rings in the festive season by publicly turning on its Christmas lights. The store is located on Dam Square and stays open until 22:00 during the event.

MUSIC | Super Sonic Jazz

📅 Friday November 17th
Bass player to the stars (and celebrated solo-performer) Thundercat will play at Paradiso this November, as part of a larger festival called Super Sonic Jazz. Moses Boyd Exodus and Jameszoo Quintet are also booked.

LITERATURE | Boekenmarkt in de Hallen

📅 Sunday November 16th
Amsterdam’s newest (and most effortlessly trendy) retail centre de Hallen will host a massive book market in mid-November. There will be a huge range of books on offer at the fair including rare, secondhand and specialist editions.

ART | Amsterdam Art Weekend

📅 Thursday November 23rd to Sunday November 26th
Contemporary art galleries and museums throughout the city will host special exhibitions and other events during four days at the end of November in collobration with Amsterdam Art Weekend. While the festival is keen to showcase Dutch talent, there’re always plenty of international names on their program.

ART | Jump into the Future – Art from the 1990s and 2000s

📅 Sunday November 26th to Sunday November 8th

Over the next six months, the Stedelijk will exhibit a number of artworks that were donated to the museum by contemporary German art collector Thomas Borgmann in 2016. These pieces were all created between the 1990s and 2000s by artists working from various fields and mediums.

HEALTH & LEISURE | November Run Amsterdam

📅 Saturday November 25th

A large group of moustached amateur athletes will run 5 kilometre around Vondelpark this November in order to raise money and awareness for prostate and testicular cancer as well as male suicide. Potential runners (or walkers) can sign up here.

FOOD & DRINK | New Market

📅 Friday November 24th
The brains behind Amsterdam’s popular Sunday markets recently decided to add another date to their calendars and will organise another monthly event called the New Market. Guests can expect a wide range of organic food and drinks, alongside live music and other shopping opportunities.

ART | Christian Boltanski – NA

📅 Friday November 24th to Saturday April 28th
French artist Christian Boltanski will install a site-specific piece in the Oude Kerk this November which revolves around modified versions of the church’s interior tombstones and coats that have been donated by sex workers active in the Red Light District.
