You shouldn’t come to Italy without eating pastries every morning. Wake up early and head to the pasticceria for a shot of strong espresso and a delectable Sicilian cannoli or French cream puff. Try the frittelle (doughnut balls), which are only made during Carnival season. Or the bussolai, buttery cookies made to be dunked into sweet wine or dark coffee. Locals in Castello swear by this pastry shop, where everything’s made in-house by the owners. Stop for a drink or a coffee, and choose a few of the delectable sweets from the counter. Buttercream-frosted chocolate tarts, little slices of ricotta cheesecakes, tiramisu cups and cream-filled croissants. Opening hours are a temperamental, but go earlier in the day for the best selection.

2. Pasticceria Rosa Salva

This is an elegant and slightly pricier shop with truly excellent pastries and coffee. You can lounge in the gorgeous interior, or eat at the counter for normal prices. Once you’ve had the pistachio cream puffs, you’ll find yourself dreaming about them for years to come. Consider yourself warned! The shop has two locations – one in the San Marco district, another close to the hospital on the north side of town.

3. Tonolo

Tonolo is an institution in Dorsoduro. The tiny place is jam-packed in the morning, but don’t let that put you off! Plunge into the crowd and choose from the diverse selection of sweets. Their coffees and pastries are perfect and the shop runs like a well-oiled machine.

A bakery that’s been open since 1742, this place serves up delicious goods that are a slice of history. Try a krapfen which is a kind of squishy, yeasty doughnut, or a simple and tasty cream puff. A spot not to be missed for lovers of traditional baking.

This pastry shop in Cannaregio is known above all for its fabulous pizzette, bite-sized pizzas. It’s also got an assortment of cookies, cakes, and drinks, so it’s a great place for a snack on the fly.
