Sloth hanging from a tree in Costa Rica

The Real Costa Rica

Like Morocco, Costa Rica is an extremely biodiverse country, but you could argue that it’s even more interesting. It’s home to hundreds of volcanoes – lying close to the intersection of four tectonic plates – and surrounding them are a range of fascinating rainforests, jungles and high-altitude cloud forests, and that’s before you consider the country’s gorgeous tropical coast. Our eight-day itinerary takes in three majorly different landscapes, starting with Arenal Volcano National Park. Our hotel in Arenal is full of natural hot springs, from which you can soak in warm waters while staring at the giant volcano acting as its source of energy. You’ll explore more hot springs, hike to a waterfall and go sloth-spotting in the forest. From there it’s up into mountainous Monteverde, where you’ll learn about Costa Rican cuisine and go on a nighttime cloud forest trek in search of howler monkeys and pumas. Our final destination is the laid-back Pacific surf town of Tamarindo – the perfect place to visualise wave action, or explore the tropical coastline via ATVs.

Atlantic Azores

This incredible archipelago, far off the coast of Portugal, is like a spiritual sibling to Iceland. It’s also an example of the unique landscapes formed on volcanic islands, geothermal waters flow all over and it’s a place with unlimited adventure potential. The main difference is the weather, which is much warmer, resulting in a remarkably verdant array of vegetation that paints the islands in a rich bright green coat. Our six-day itinerary on São Miguel starts with an exploration of the striking crater lakes of Sete Cidades, formed naturally by a volcano. You’ll have the chance to cycle around and kayak on the lakes, before moving focus onto Ribeira Grande. After an optional whale-spotting marine safari you’ll hike to Salto do Cabrito waterfall, the perfect place to learn about Azorean geology and sustainable geothermal energy, as well as a chance for a refreshing dip in the rock pools. The action is ramped up in Ribeira dos Caldeirões, where you’ll get to canyon down slippery ravines and abseil across a waterfall, before soaking off in some natural hot springs. Our last day includes a hike around Furnas Lake, but before that we’ll prep a traditional cozido stew, which will then cook underground for six hours using only the natural geothermal heat of the island. Our hearty dinner will be ready to serve by the time we’re back.

Since you are here, we would like to share our vision for the future of travel - and the direction Culture Trip is moving in.

Culture Trip launched in 2011 with a simple yet passionate mission: to inspire people to go beyond their boundaries and experience what makes a place, its people and its culture special and meaningful — and this is still in our DNA today. We are proud that, for more than a decade, millions like you have trusted our award-winning recommendations by people who deeply understand what makes certain places and communities so special.

Increasingly we believe the world needs more meaningful, real-life connections between curious travellers keen to explore the world in a more responsible way. That is why we have intensively curated a collection of premium small-group trips as an invitation to meet and connect with new, like-minded people for once-in-a-lifetime experiences in three categories: Culture Trips, Rail Trips and Private Trips. Our Trips are suitable for both solo travelers, couples and friends who want to explore the world together.

Culture Trips are deeply immersive 5 to 16 days itineraries, that combine authentic local experiences, exciting activities and 4-5* accommodation to look forward to at the end of each day. Our Rail Trips are our most planet-friendly itineraries that invite you to take the scenic route, relax whilst getting under the skin of a destination. Our Private Trips are fully tailored itineraries, curated by our Travel Experts specifically for you, your friends or your family.

We know that many of you worry about the environmental impact of travel and are looking for ways of expanding horizons in ways that do minimal harm - and may even bring benefits. We are committed to go as far as possible in curating our trips with care for the planet. That is why all of our trips are flightless in destination, fully carbon offset - and we have ambitious plans to be net zero in the very near future.
