Naxos, the chilled Greek island getaway, has a secret: the Aegean Sea has strong winds all year round, making it the perfect playground for water sports enthusiasts. Our local insiders share their favourite spots for kite- and windsurfing, so you know exactly where to go for the ultimate experience.

1. Naxos Surf Club

A 15-minute walk from Naxos town centre, this one-stop shop for water sports aficionados packs a real punch when it comes to location and equipment. It sits on a strip of sand near Agios Georgios, the island’s main beach, a superb surf spot with ideal wind conditions. It’s bustling and full of competitive spirit. The windsurfing school has certified instructors, and clients have access to a range of quality equipment (including JP-Australia boards and sails by Neil Pryde and North Sails). If you’ll be spending most of your time on the water, consider renting one of the villa’s studio flats or apartments further along the beach. Recommended by local insider Ellie Dumper

2. Ride with the Gods

Sports Center

On land, Mikri Vigla is a quiet, serene beach, often devoid of crowds. Out at sea, the constant winds that blow in make it the ideal training ground for water sports fans. It’s here where you can find Ride with the Gods, a wind- and kitesurfing station that’s tapped into its ideal location. Beginner, intermediate and pro athletes can practise in flat waters, freeride and enjoy long distances. The school offers windsurfing, kitesurfing and stand-up paddleboard classes and also rent out equipment. Recommended by local insider Ellie Dumper

Close to Orkos Beach, this kitesurfing school offers excellent courses for beginners, the highest safety standards and brand new equipment. Learn everything you need to know from your IKO (International Kiteboarding Association) instructor who will also have a radio and a rescue boat (should anyone need it). Plus, when you book in advance, you get an extra hour for free. Not ready to leave? Kick back after a lesson at the beach bar, which offers breakfast juices, cocktails and live entertainment in the evenings. Recommended by local insider Ellie Dumper

4. Laguna Beach Park

Natural Feature, Park

This family-friendly windsurfing school sitting on the banks of a lagoon is the go-to option for novices and children (and also offers stand-up paddleboard classes). The warm, shallow waters are ideal for beginners – and for advanced freestylers looking to practise new tricks. This spot has a more chilled-out vibe than the other locations, and the coast has plenty of biking and hiking trails if you are looking for a little break from the sea. In the evening, you can expect magnificent sunsets – best enjoyed over a cocktail (or two) at the beach bar. Recommended by local insider Charlie Bush

The school offers private and semi-private courses, which are delivered by IKO-approved instructors – and tailored to their students’ specific needs and ability levels. You can rent equipment or buy used gear directly from the shop. A professional photographer is onsite during lessons to snap that shot we know you’re going to boast about back home.
