Agia Anna is popular with visitors all year round, thanks to its idyllic swimming conditions, picturesque fishing boats and range of beachside bars, restaurants and tavernas. If you’re in the mood for a coastal wander, the pretty little church perched on the south side of the beach is well worth a visit, though there are sunbeds and umbrellas available if you want to max out on seaside relaxation. While Plaka beach is one of the island’s most popular spots, there’s plenty of space for everyone across its wide, sandy expanses and mesmerizingly blue Aegean waters (including the odd nudist or two – Plaka used to be entirely reserved for nude sunbathers). Buses leave twice hourly from Naxos, so if you’re relying on public transport to get around, Plaka is a solid option. Recommended by local insider Ellie Dumper

Aliko beach is that secluded Grecian paradise you’ve been dreaming of for years. A stunning white sand stretch, the beach is surrounded by small turquoise coves broken up by cedar forests and undisturbed by any major tourist infrastructure. While this means it’s not quite as convenient to get to as the larger beaches, don’t let this put you off – it’s 100% worthwhile when you get here. Agios Prokopios is loud, lively and brimming with feel-good atmosphere, particularly during the warmer months. The beach’s golden sands and calm, crystal-clear waters are a big draw, as are the cafe-bars, tavernas and sunbed rentals that line the beachfront. With plenty of space and all the amenities you need available nearby, Agios Prokopios is the perfect location for a chilled beach day with friends or family. Apollonas is an idyllic little fishing village with a small stretch of sandy beach, situated on the north side of the island. You’ll find some locals and tourists enjoying the sun, but, generally speaking, it’s quieter than larger, more southerly beaches on this list. Sample locally caught seafood in the village’s tavernas while you’re here, and visit the half-finished – but still 10m-long (33ft) – Kouros statue nearby, which dates back to the 6th century BCE.
