An archetypal Greek island escape, Lefkada has beautiful mountains and forests, pretty towns with tavernas and seafood restaurants around every cobbled corner, plus gorgeous beaches lapped by the Ionian Sea. And there’s no better way to experience it than with a stay in a classic Greek villa. Our selection runs the gamut from rustic properties built from local stone to modern complexes within easy reach of towns and villages. Each is different, but they all share a laid-back vibe, most with outdoor pools and sea views.

This three-villa complex combines modern luxury with a rustic feel, with rugged stone walls, whitewashed wooden ceilings and rough-hewn stone sinks. All the villas have infinity swimming pools and jacuzzis, which overlook the blue sea from their hilltop location, and feature kitchens so you can cook for yourselves; alternatively, the Lefkada city tavernas are a short drive away.

All have comfortable interiors and private pools, while the daily Greek breakfasts of yoghurt, honey, eggs and organic fruit, served on your terrace, are a delicious and healthy way to start the day.

3. Villa Veneziano

The name of this luxurious villa may be Italian, and the design reminiscent of a Venetian palazzo with the addition of Byzantine arches and courtyards, but the location, on a forested hill on the east coast of Lefkada overlooking the ocean, is uniquely Greek. There’s a lovely walled garden and outdoor pool where you can relax, along with a full kitchen, four double rooms and one twin.

5. Il Viaggio Verde
