The Top Steak and Grill-Houses in Athens
Despite Greek cuisine having a strong base of vegetarian dishes, meat is undeniably a staple in the heart of Greeks. While many traditional restaurants (tavernas) always offer a wide range of meat dishes, recently, a few steak and grill houses specializing in meat have opened their doors in the Greek capital. Here is where you can enjoy different cuts, aged meats and the method of cooking you prefer, compared to the usual well-done grilled meats you will find in typical eateries. Here are the top steak and grill houses you should visit in Athens.

To Kreas
The unassuming neighbourhood of Petralona with its island-like vibe, though centrally located, is home to a delicious and humble steakhouse called To Kreas (meat in Greek). Situated in a maisonette-style house with a stunning rooftop terrace, this little place has an interesting meat menu, which includes delicious T-bone steaks, unique veal souvlaki, black Angus picanha steak and perfectly grilled lamb meat cooked in a josper oven. Try to save some room for dessert.
Basegrill
We are pretty sure you won’t mind jumping into a cab to reach Bournazi, once you’ve had your first taste of Basegrill. Located in this residential neighbourhood less than 20 minutes from the centre, Basegrill is the brainchild of two brothers and is one of the first meat-focused restaurants in the Greek capital. At this eatery, the meat is brought to your table where you can make your selection and have it cut in front of your eyes. Trust the cook and begin your meal with one of the unique starters to work up an appetite before enjoying divine cuts. The wine and beer lists are equally impressive and we highly suggest you try to save some space for the cheese plate for the perfect end to a wonderful night out.
Telemachos Athens
With its air of a Parisian brasserie, Telemachos, located in downtown Athens in the Panepistimio covered passage, is another excellent address to remember. The menu is as inviting and impressive as the decor (read high ceilings, chandeliers and picture-perfect table decorations), with a few classics such as carpaccio, rib-eye steaks, Brazilian picanha, T-bone steaks or mouth-watering pork fillets. Aged cold meats are also available but don’t forget to have a look at the wine list, where you will find no less than 200 labels from Greece and abroad.
Farma Bralou Steak Bar
Part of the Yoleni’s flagship concept store (dubbed the house of Greek producers) in Kolonaki, where you can find an open-air bar, a corner with fresh fruits and vegetables, an olive oil corner and a juice bar, the Farma Bralou Steak Bar welcomes all meat lovers with open arms. Located on the first floor of this unique concept store, the steak bar offers fresh meat from the affiliated butcher, which arrives at your table in record time, cooked exactly the way you want. This innovative farm-to-table approach is a rarity in Greece and allows you to choose meat from premium cattle, as well as exotic poultry such as pheasant or quail meat at the prices it is sold in the shop.
Bar B.Q.
Located in Nea Smyrni, Bar B.Q. is one of the safest bets for delicious and juicy meat. This smart BBQ restaurant has been around for ages and continues to impress with its carefully sourced, dry-aged steaks (the steak Limousin is to die for and the Argentinian Black Angus rib-eye melts in your mouth) and grilled meat dishes. Their side dishes and desserts are also delicious. All in all, it’s an excellent dining experience you should not miss out on.
Vezené
A modern and atmospheric bistro in Athens, in the Hilton Hotel district, Vezené hardly needs an introduction to Athenians. But to an outsider, this little gem of a place serves delicious food with a strong emphasis on sourcing top quality ingredients and raw materials. The meat is simply divine while the side dishes shine with originality and flavours (did we mention the truffle potato chips?). It may be a splurge for some, but it is definitely worth it.
