Wander around the island’s olive and citrus groves and sprawling farmland and you’ll get an idea of the fresh, local delights you can experience on Naxos. From fresh goat’s cheese and honey to just-caught seafood and the famed potatoes, our local insiders pick out the gastronomic gems that make Naxos a treat for foodies who’ve worked up an appetite.
If your goal is to try as many local delicacies as possible when travelling then Axiotissa Taverna is going to be your favourite Naxos haunt. This local, organic eatery is dishing out the freshest locally sourced ingredients. You’ll also enjoy quick service (so you won’t stay ravenous for long) and friendly staff. Just remember to save room for one of its deliciously decadent and rich desserts. Since tables fill up quickly, it’s highly recommended that you book a table in advance. Hikers will fall in love with Taverna Giannis and not just because it’s situated in prime hiking territory. If you’re looking for Greek comfort foods, you’re most certainly going to find them here (just follow the smell of roast chicken and pork). Vegetarians will also find plenty to eat including the fresh bean salad with generous heaps of feta (we’re drooling already). Lunch ends at 3pm, so make sure to grab a table (reservations aren’t necessary) and to bring cash with you (it doesn’t take cards). Recommended by local insider Ellie Dumper
Some of the best dining spots are found when wandering down tucked-away side streets and, in Naxos, you’ll discover this rustic gem smuggled away from the throngs of tourists. Pamper yourself with some home-cooked taverna specialties all year round. Local favourites include grilled octopus, fried calamari, lamb and cheese drizzled with honey. You won’t find more traditional and reasonably priced Greek foods with generous portions than at Metaxi Mas. Recommended by local insider Charlie Bush
If you’re looking for the perfect place to grab delicious and authentic Greek food in a casual, no-frills environment, Taverna Dalas should be on the top of your list. This cute local hub may be a bit hidden, but it’s worth tracking down. The food is always made from fresh, local ingredients (think off-the-boat seafood and hand-picked veggies). Whether you’re looking for a quick snack to fuel your next hike or you’re looking to dine on a leisurely, traditional lunch, the taverna offers both dining experiences in a homey setting. Seafood lovers should heed the call of Akrogiali Restaurant, where you’ll find freshly caught fish prepared with local herbs and ingredients every day. Locals have also professed their love for their Greek salad with the must-try xinomizithra (a white Naxos cheese). This cosy family-owned restaurant can be found among the popular sandy beaches of the island, making it a prime dining spot after an afternoon of exploring. It’s perfect for breakfast, a quick afternoon ice cream or a glass of chilled rosé at sunset. Recommended by local insider Charlie Bush

Since you are here, we would like to share our vision for the future of travel - and the direction Culture Trip is moving in.
Culture Trip launched in 2011 with a simple yet passionate mission: to inspire people to go beyond their boundaries and experience what makes a place, its people and its culture special and meaningful — and this is still in our DNA today. We are proud that, for more than a decade, millions like you have trusted our award-winning recommendations by people who deeply understand what makes certain places and communities so special.
Increasingly we believe the world needs more meaningful, real-life connections between curious travellers keen to explore the world in a more responsible way. That is why we have intensively curated a collection of premium small-group trips as an invitation to meet and connect with new, like-minded people for once-in-a-lifetime experiences in three categories: Culture Trips, Rail Trips and Private Trips. Our Trips are suitable for both solo travelers, couples and friends who want to explore the world together.
Culture Trips are deeply immersive 5 to 16 days itineraries, that combine authentic local experiences, exciting activities and 4-5* accommodation to look forward to at the end of each day. Our Rail Trips are our most planet-friendly itineraries that invite you to take the scenic route, relax whilst getting under the skin of a destination. Our Private Trips are fully tailored itineraries, curated by our Travel Experts specifically for you, your friends or your family.
We know that many of you worry about the environmental impact of travel and are looking for ways of expanding horizons in ways that do minimal harm - and may even bring benefits. We are committed to go as far as possible in curating our trips with care for the planet. That is why all of our trips are flightless in destination, fully carbon offset - and we have ambitious plans to be net zero in the very near future.
