Like in many other European countries, the economic turndown has generated many startups in Greece. Covering a variety of topics, these small companies are bringing a wave of hope to the country, allowing people to wish for better days. Here are five innovative startups worth discovering, all of which originated in Greece.

Forky

A freshly cooked dish delivered to your doorstep (or in the office) within 10-20 minutes? This is the challenge Forky took on in 2014. This innovative venture-backed food company decided to offer fast delivery of delicious, fresh, and healthy meals to people around Athens, encouraging people to eat healthily. They offer two main dishes and one salad every day, with a lunch and a dinner menu; the user-friendly website even gives you the option of knowing the calorie count of each meal so that you know what you’re consuming. The startup employs chefs, engineers, and an operation team to ensure client satisfaction, and as one of the fastest growing companies in the country, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Forky expands to other cities.

Allcancode

Who said teaching children how to code was impossible? Athens-based e-learning startup Allcancode has successfully taken on the challenge and developed a video game called ‘Run Marco!’ Working on common browsers and all tablets, the game teaches children how to code by having fun. The rules are simple: you must solve each game level by following instructions using a visual programming language to guide characters. Easy-peasy, right? The game is also available for adults and serves as a demystification of coding language. How fun is that? Indeed, anyone can code.

Nannuka

The answer for all the young parents (and not so young) out there, Nannuka is an online platform where parents can easily search, find, and select childcare experts located all across Europe. Founded in 2014, the Athens-based startup, now expanding into new markets (UK and Italy), became a leader in this particular niche. No need to cancel your evening with friends or squeeze in a pediatrician’s appointment between two meetings, as you can now seek help and find your babysitter online. Welcome to parenting 2.0.

Pockee

In a time when saving money at all costs (pun intended) is necessary, Pockee is a startup that emerged with an innovative concept. Founded in 2014, Pockee is an app/platform which allows consumers to score unique deals and discounts on fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) brands. The paperless coupons are available on their mobile phone, and the deducted amount is then transferred to their bank or Paypal account. Including leading consumer good brands and supermarkets in Greece, Pockee is currently planning on expanding to Turkey.

Winks

We’ve all been there before – you’re reading a book at your favorite coffee shop, and you wink at your neighbor because you’ve both noticed the look of the overwhelmed barista. Or you’re simply waiting at the bus stop and want to ask the girl next to you about her pair of shoes. Those scenarios are now a thing of the past, thanks to Winks. With this app, you can easily connect with other users located within a 150-meter perimeter. The app aims to help connect you with the people you pass by on the street or while you’re sitting at a bar terrace. The Thessaloniki-based startup allows you to visit the Instagram or Facebook profiles of people around you or find out their Snapchat username. Wink at them and if they choose, strike a time-limited (20 minutes) conversation. With more than 11,000 users, this app helps our digitally obsessed generation to connect in an innovative, new way.
