Elegantly-furnished rooms decorated in calming, cosy colours, and boasting outdoor spaces bursting with green, this posh pad is a soothing hideaway from the mad energy of central Berlin. While the standard rooms are exquisite, the highlight here is the four rooms sat within old shipping containers on the rooftop of the neighbouring building, surrounded by private green terraces. Green is a theme here, as electric BMWs are available for guests free of charge.

Want some high-end services? You’ll find them here. This Berlin institution, just behind the Brandenburg Gate, offers city tours, a limousine service and, for those in need of extra pampering, a butler. The rooms are the epitome of old-school sumptuousness, and downstairs you’ll find atmospheric bars, indulgent restaurants and a shop. Just make sure you remember to leave the hotel at some point and explore the rest of Berlin!

Located in the cosmopolitan Moabit district, the first thing that strikes you about this slick, contemporary hotel is the natural light flooding in from double-level, glass-domed ceilings. Bedrooms are luxurious yet, in typical German fashion, pleasingly functional, with a high-end spacious finish and work desks, flat screen TVs and wifi. It’s a four-minute walk to the Birkenstraße U-Bahn station, 3.5km (2.1mi) to the Brandenburg Gate and around 4km (2.5mi) from the Berlin Wall Memorial.

The shiny Philippe Starck-designed shell of this new hotel houses spacious, elegant rooms with plenty of design flair – from recessed LED lighting to bold colour-blocked walls. Downstairs, the cosy, retro-modern Circus bar (the carpet and jazzy banquette seating are gloriously 1970s) is a cosy, buzzy spot. Ensure you take advantage of its amazing location – it’s just around the corner from Museum Island on the edge of trendy Friedrichshain.

The Circus Hotel

As colourful and quirky as its name suggests, the Circus is ideal for backpackers or solo travellers looking for somewhere within budget, without compromising on style. Half hostel, half hotel, its shared dorms are bright and modern, with sleek wooden floors and festoon lights, while its private hotel rooms are interiors magazine-worthy, with cool photographic wallpaper and bohemian colour palettes. As well being just steps from buzzy Rosenthaler Platz, the hotel has its very own microbrewery which is perfect for meeting fellow travellers.

Honigmond Boutique Hotel

History buffs will love this family-run boutique hotel, oozing with tradition, and located between the Natural History Museum and the Pergamon Museum. Floral-patterned wallpaper, antique oil paintings and dark wood four-poster beds will make you feel as if you’ve stepped back in time. But that’s not to say it’s old-fashioned. Decorative touches (velvet throws on the beds, fresh flowers on the windowsill) add personality, modernity and warmth. It’s this attention to detail that makes wandering the narrow corridors of this 100 year-old building such a pleasure.

Lux 11

If you’re looking for Instagram-worthy style, you’ll find few more photogenic hotels than this one. Located around the corner from trendy Weinmeisterstraße, the simple, yet tasteful suites and apartments are characterised by a combination of rustic stone cladding, light-filled open-plan layouts and Scandi-chic greys with a pop of neon colour schemes. The real highlight, however, doesn’t lie within the hotel at all but at its sister hotel, the Weinmeister, five minutes down the road. Here, Lux 11 guests can enjoy the stunning rooftop terrace, with sweeping views over the city rooftops.

If you’re looking for somewhere to really feel at home in, Gorki Apartments combines the style of a boutique hotel with the privacy and personality of a personal city pad. Each of the six high-end apartments is individually designed in styles that vary from elegant country house-chic, with mismatched wooden chairs around a long white dining table, to mid-century bohemian, with leggy furniture and canopy beds. Located by Rosenthaler Platz, flush with dining options should you decide not to self cater, and excellent transport connections, it’s a perfect spot from which to discover the city.

Hotel ZOE by AMANO Group

Intimate Hotel ZOE may be smaller than other AMANO group hotels but what it lacks in size, it more than makes up for in comfort and character. Located by the idyllic Monbijou Park, bordering the Spree River, this hotel is perfectly situated for exploring the unmissable Hackescher Markt, with its hive of shops, bars and restaurants, and for stepping back in time at the DDR Museum. After a day of sightseeing, Hotel ZOE’s G&T Bar, with its seductively moody atmosphere (think rich golds and marble), invites you to unwind before you head back to your stylishly minimalist room.

Located on historic Bebelplatz, in a building that once housed the Dresden Bank’s headquarters, this hotel is ideally situated for sightseeing – a leisurely stroll down Unter den Linden takes you to the Brandenburg Gate, while Museum Island is less than a 10-minute walk away. Rooms are bold and arty, with bright colour palettes and chunky, modern furniture. And if art’s your thing, don’t miss the hotel’s Become a Berlin Art Insider deal, which combines a stay with a three-hour private tour of some of Berlin’s most famous contemporary art galleries, with the chance to meet some of the artists and gallery owners themselves.

Regent Berlin

Hotel, Luxury

For out-and-out five-star luxury, it’s hard to top this bouji behemoth. Think marble floors, grand pianos, bouquets overflowing with fresh lilies and sparkling chandeliers, although nothing can prepare you for how decadent this hotel is. Rooms are positively palatial, each equipped with a Nespresso coffee machine and luxurious L’Occitane toiletries in the bathrooms. Treat yourself to afternoon tea at the Tea & Lobby Lounge, or push the boat out at the hotel’s casual seasonal restaurant Charlotte and Fritz. For the ultimate afternoon of self-indulgence, head to the Regent’s spa for a massage or a spell in the sauna.
