Berlin-based photographer Alessia Baccellini turned her lens on Urban Spree, the sprawling cultural space along the riverbank and discovered a vibrant hub on the edge of old East Berlin. Following the bend of the Spree through the city, Baccellini captured shots of life on and around the river. The Urban Spree project, a huge 1700sqm arts and culture space in the middle of Friedrichshain, has by now reached cult status. Home to festivals, arts projects, concerts, gigs and community groups, the Urban Spree is less a physical space than it is a conviction that Berlin not lose touch with its rebellious and artistic past.
