Nice is nice but the trendy south of France can be a drain on your wallet too – after all, you’re on the yacht-filled Côte d’Azur and within a stone’s throw of stylish Saint-Tropez. But when you rent a great-value holiday apartment, it’s possible to live like Brigitte Bardot without breaking the bank. What’s more, you’ll have space to spread out and the opportunity to snag a sun-drenched terrace on which to drain bottles of local rosé. Across from the Palais de Congrès exhibition space, these studio and one-bedroom apartments (sleeping two to four) are handy for business folk – but don’t think that’s all they’re good for. You’re also right by the Modern and Contemporary Art Museum and imposing head-shaped sculpture-cum-building Tête Carrée. The apartments themselves, which come with kitchenettes, workspaces and in some cases balconies, will appeal to all sorts of travellers, with their neutral and pastel decor.

If you’ve come to Nice for the Riviera lifestyle, this place delivers. Steps from the beach, the building’s rooftop terrace has sun-drenched loungers and shaded sofas for sipping glasses of local rosé. Apartments sleeping four go all out on the sunshine coast theme, with splashes of pink coral, gold and aquamarine on bedspreads, walls and ombre curtains. Balconies let you take further advantage of the local climate. Whip up breakfast in your kitchenette and enjoy it alfresco.

3. Apart'hotel Ajoupa

The exterior is postcard Nice, with pale pink walls and light blue shutters. But this apart-hotel, primely placed by the seafront next to central Jardin Albert 1er, is a whole different world inside. Each of the apartments, which range from studios to one bedroom (and sleep one to four people), are slightly different, but all have a clean, contemporary feel and come with Metro tiling in kitchenettes and wacky print wallpaper. There are some nice hotel-like touches too: pillow menus and concierge-style assistance for booking tours and tickets.

Along the curve of the beach to the west, and moments from the pebbles, you’ll find these studio and one-bedroom apartments sleeping up to four people. Kitted out with proper kitchens, laundry facilities and a sun-drenched pool, it’s a great choice for longer stays or if you’re travelling with kids in tow. What’s more, an optional daily buffet breakfast with cheeses and cereals is on hand should you not feel up to cooking.

5. City Break Opéra

Stopping off in Nice for a short stay? You can’t get much closer to the airport than this one-bedroom apartment, which is a one-minute drive from the terminal. That’s not to say it couldn’t work for longer stays; a kitchen with microwave and coffee maker allows you be self-sufficient. Crucially, you’re only a five-minute drive from the beach. You’ll be bedding down on a double sofa bed, so this apartment is best for solo travellers or cosy couples.
