Kuopio is a student town, a popular tourist destination, a stop for summer cruises and surrounded by ski resorts. This means that you can find plenty of bars and clubs throughout the city, and even its surrounding villages, for a nightcap or an evening out with friends, and most with accompanying restaurants for tasty pub-style food. These are some of the top bars to check out in and around Kuopio to suit all tastes and budgets.

This harbourside bar and restaurant looks over the lake and is a common stop on lake cruises, both for its charming terrace views and its low-key atmosphere. The kitchen serves a range of pizzas, including reindeer pizza, and has a barbeque that is fired up during the summer. The bar also has a sauna and Jacuzzi for hire for extra relaxation, both of which are especially comforting during the winter.

One of Kuopio’s top restaurant-bars has a full schedule of live entertainment and special events for a lively night out. But the harbour setting and beautiful old building also makes it an ideal place to relax with a beer and chat with friends before the party starts.

Ukko Tahko

If you’re visiting the Tahko ski resort and are tired out after a long day on the slopes, the best place to unwind is the basement bar in the Ukko Tahko hotel. It is one of the more quiet and mellow bars on the resort with a warm atmosphere and a classy yet comfortable living-room-style decor to chat, play snooker or watch the hockey game. You can also order some comfort food from the accompanying restaurant to have with your drinks.

Wanha Satama

One of the most attractive bars on the harbour and one of the more popular casual dining restaurants, especially during the summer. Wanha Satama is located in an old-style wooden building and decorated with a classic nautical theme. There is also some delicious food, including a brunch buffet and classic Finnish dishes such as salmon soup, and regular musical acts performing.

Where else can you have your evening drink or dinner at the top of Eastern Finland’s most beautiful mountains? Panorama Bar & Café is located at the top of one of the slopes of the Tahko ski resort and offers stunning views of the lakes, forests and frozen mountain slopes. You can look over these lovely views in a beautiful log-cabin-style building with a warm, relaxing atmosphere with regular live music and DJs. It is also a great place to hire for a unique and atmospheric party.

Tirol Tahko

Bar, Restaurant, Finnish

Another bar in the Tahko ski resort and the perfect place to go to after a day of skiing or for a mid-day ski break. Tirol has a slightly livelier atmosphere than the Ukko Tahko bar but still has a classic Alpine lodge theme and warm fireplace. The restaurant serves quality comfort food such as burgers and fries and there is even an igloo sauna to rent for extra warmth and comfort.

Koivumäki Manor

Bar, Hotel Restaurant, Finnish

A manor house may seem an unconventional location for a bar, but it is a classy spot to stop for a drink or to rent for a special event. The bar sells award-winning liquors from the Lignell & Piispanen factory, which can be enjoyed in the manor’s garden during the summer or with a meal from the restaurant.
