Kuopio is an Eastern Finnish city that combines tradition with modern trends, and this is especially evident in its local food culture. As well as some tasty dinners, this means there are plenty of places for a delicious filling breakfast and a cosmopolitan brunch to tide you over. These are some of the best spots in Kuopio for a good morning meal.

1. Puijo Tower Revolving Restaurant

This main tourist attraction in Kuopio also contains a fully serviced revolving café and restaurant. The restaurant includes a lunch buffet, meaning you can enjoy a full breakfast or brunch while gazing at the best views of Kuopio and the beautiful countryside around it.

2. Wanha Satama

This marvellous harbourside restaurant serves a brunch buffet every Tuesday from 11 a.m. for just €30 per head. The selection includes local fish delicacies such as garlic herring and other favourites such as chili-marinated zucchini, croissants, sausages, and lemon chicken, with fruit or cake for dessert. All of this is served in beautiful nautical surroundings overlooking the harbour.

3. Gusto Runin

This is one of Kuopio’s classiest restaurants, located in a stunning converted building, and has a daily tapas buffet for only €20 per person. This includes favorite Mediterranean dishes including marinated olives, handmade pesto, and amaretto biscuits. Gusto Runin’s cocktail and wine-tasting menu isn’t to be missed either, or if you prefer something non-alcoholic, there is Italian lemonade.

5. Rauhalahti Hotel

This spa resort and traditional lumberjack lodge a few miles outside of Kuopio has several restaurants and hotels which offer a variety of traditional food options. The hotel has a breakfast buffet which is only €10 for non-residents, a lunch buffet served from 11 a.m., and various meals available at the other onsite restaurants. Rauhalahti is a beautiful spot to start the morning and stay all day for the lumberjack show and evening entertainment.

6. Kahvila Kaneli

A coffee shop whose name means “Café Cinnamon,” Kahvila Kaneli serves not only coffee but also delicious cakes, pastries, pies, soups, and salads. The coffee and pastries can be enjoyed at any time of day, while lunch items such as soups or salads can be ordered any time after 10:30 a.m. and can even be delivered. Be sure to try the smoked salmon pie made with local Kuopio fish.

7. Ramin Konditoria Kahvila Kuopio

For a brunch full of sweet treats, you can’t get much better than the cake buffet at Ramin Konditoria Kahvila, which is open on Saturday from 11 a.m. You can enjoy as many of the café’s delicious cakes as you want, as well as some good coffee, all for only €11.90. The buffet includes Finnish and international choices such as bébés (frosted pastries), danishes, and croissants. If you still have room, you can have some tasty gelato afterwards.

8. Mount Sherpa

Nepalese restaurant Mount Sherpa has a weekday lunch menu that changes daily. Depending on the day of the week, dishes include chicken tikka, fish shiraz, and garlic lamb kofta. The offer also includes rice, naan bread, a salad buffet, mango lassi, and Nepalese tea, all served in beautiful surroundings with classic Nepalese decorations.

9. Hanna Partanen

For a taste unique to Kuopio, head to Hanna Partanen’s bakery for the best local pastry, the kalakukko. These are pastries with a rye-bread crust filled with a mixture of meat and fish. They can be found throughout the city, but the freshly baked pastries at Hanna Partanen are the best, and are served from 6 a.m. every day. Be sure to get there early to nab the very freshest pastries.
