Prague is home to many fine chain bookstores but it’s the independent ones that are the most interesting. From a dedicated children’s literature shop to an antique bookstore known for its collection of used, vintage and out-of-print manuscripts, the capital of the Czech Republic has a range of options for book lovers just waiting to be discovered.

Globe

Bookstore, Store

Prague’s largest English language bookstore stocks more than 10,000 books, newspapers and magazines. Though you can find books in Czech, German and French, Globe is best known for its extensive English language stock. One of its best features is its cafe, which often hosts literary talks, quizzes and book presentations. There is also plenty of sitting space throughout and the bookstore is open until midnight on weekdays and 1am on weekends.

Shakespeare and Sons

Bookstore

The largest retailer of used books in Prague, Shakespeare and Sons also sells brand new books in both English and French. Just steps away from Charles Bridge and with a reading room in a historic cellar, this is a great spot for getting a cup of coffee, attending an open mic night or catching a photographic or art exhibition.

Amadito & Friends

Bookstore, Shop

Prague’s only independent bookstore dedicated exclusively to children’s literature, Amadito is the ideal place for kids to discover books. Large rugs with cushions and a corner dedicated to board games and handmade art make this a cozy space for both parents and kids. You can pick up a classic, search through the bestsellers or have fun with picture books. There are scheduled story time events, as well as puppet shows and other activities.

Bendox

Bookstore

A unique bookstore focusing on design, art and architecture in both the Czech and English languages, Bendox itself is a work of art, with white shelves covering the walls to give the space a clean, futuristic look.

Antikvariát Kant

Bookstore

One of the largest antique bookstores in Prague, Kant is famous for its impressive collection of out-of-print, vintage and used books in several languages. There is also a great selection of old maps, posters, decorative prints and old photographs and postcards.
