A short walk from Paphos’s pretty fishing harbour, as well as two sandy beaches, these simple but comfy apartments are perfect for self-caterers. As well as having nicely equipped kitchens, they come with a welcome pack of tea, coffee, milk, beers, fruit and soft drinks when you book stays of five nights or more. There’s a large shared pool set in gardens and lovely little sun-trap terraces for some rooms, too.

In coastal, villa-packed Chlorakas, these modern, palm-shaded apartments are just steps from the crystalline shallows of the Mediterranean. Along the front of the refreshing outdoor pool is a row of loungers gazing out to sea. Kids love the spacious grounds for playing and swimming, and families fit nicely in the modern, ice-white apartments, with full-sized fridges and ovens made for feeding a clan.

Close to the malls and mini-marts of Kato Paphos, Kefalos Damon is a sociable cluster of apartments around a courtyard pool, where kids will easily make friends. Apartments are basic but modern, kept cool by their tiled floors; some have corner sofas and decent-sized kitchenettes. The pool, with its bar and terrace, is a pleasant spot to hang out, but if you get bored you can always dip into the facilities at the sister hotel, 10 minutes around the corner.

In Paphos Town, 20 minutes’ walk from Paphos Beach, this apartment complex has bright, sun-flooded white apartments with kitchenettes and balconies. A family-run operation with hosts who will give you local tips, it’s well placed for Paphos’s ancient ruins, historic mosaics and glorious boat trips around the west coast. There’s a kidney-shaped pool and loungers on a smart patio, too.

This modern apartment block has spacious apartments with polished wooden floors and prettily tiled kitchens – a cut above the competition, looks wise. It’s close to Paphos’s Old Town, with historic churches, supermarkets and bakeries all within easy reach. There’s no swimming pool, but there is a nice little lawn for sunbathing, and all rooms have balconies that catch the sun.
