If you visit Sofia, take the opportunity to taste its rich mixture of Balkan, traditional Bulgarian, and Mediterranean cuisine. There’s an enormous variety of restaurants, pizzerias, bistros, and all kinds of food venues to choose from, especially if you are in the city center. Read Culture Trip’s guide of some of the best restaurants in the center of Sofia.

1. Sun & Moon

Bistro, Restaurant, Healthy, European, Bulgarian, Vegetarian

Sun & Moon is the best place to visit if you are vegetarian or want to try some natural, healthy food. They bake more than 15 types of bread every day and offer a veggie lunch menu on weekdays. On a sunny day, you can enjoy your meal at a table outside. Sun & Moon has two locations and a bakery in Sofia.

2. Divaka

Restaurant, Bulgarian

Divaka has been around for many years and has become an institution in Sofia. It’s one of the best places to taste traditional Bulgarian food or to experiment with the local varieties of international dishes. You will be served big portions for reasonable prices. Don’t miss their grilled meat and the soup served in a bread bowl.

3. Supa Star

Restaurant, Soup

Supa Star is a food venue specializing in soups and sandwiches only. The soups are always cooked that day and made of fresh ingredients according to the season, while the sandwiches are prepared in front of you. You can add a local craft beer to your meal, too.

4. Ciccione Panini Bar & Bakery # 1

Wine Bar, Italian, European

This Italian-inspired food venue serves local and Italian wines with platters of Italian cured meats and cheeses and freshly baked bread. You can add a fresh salad to it or opt for dessert. With a different promotion every night, Ciccione gives you a reason to come back over and over again.

5. Hadjidraganovite Izbi

Restaurant, Bulgarian

This folklore-style restaurant was created to present the best of Bulgarian cuisine. The authentic atmosphere, with original pieces of antique furniture and everyday items from the past, adds to the good food. The lunch menu in Hadjidraganovite Izbi (or Hadjidraganov’s Cellars) is different every day, and includes a number of house-made specialties.

6. Before & After

Restaurant, Bulgarian, European

The first way in which this restaurant will impress you is the beautiful old house where it’s situated. The atmosphere is just the beginning – the food is a mixture of Bulgarian and international dishes with an affordable lunch menu every day. On selected days of the week, tango nights take place in Before & After.

7. Ale House

Restaurant, European, Bulgarian, Fast Food, Pub Grub, Street Food

Ale House is the only Bulgarian restaurant that lets you pour your own beer… from a tap on the wall. At every table! Watch the automatic counting system, similar to the one at gas stations, to see how many liters of beer you’ve imbibed. Add fresh salads and tasty meat dishes to accompany all the beer.

8. Corso

Restaurant, European, Russian, Italian

This upscale restaurant in the center of Sofia adds an amazing view to its perfect cuisine. It’s located across the street from the Russian church, with its shiny golden bulb-shaped domes. The wine selection at Corso is excellent, and there’s a special emphasis on healthy food.

9. Bankovich

Restaurant, Bulgarian, European

If you don’t plan a day trip to Bulgaria’s neighbor, Serbia, then plan at least a visit to the Serbian Bankovich Restaurant. The grilled meats are excellent, as is everything on the lunch menu where other cuisines get involved, too.

10. Fresh Bar Kitchen

Restaurant, Belgian

If you want to get a quick bite, stop by Garibaldi Square. Fresh Bar Kitchen is designed as a takeaway venue, but you can also pull up a chair and eat on the spot. All the food is cooked fresh each day, and you can see it behind the window display. If you are a burger lover, this is a place you will love, too.
