Over the last decade, Sainte-Catherine has turned into one of Brussels’ most interesting neighborhoods. Its proximity to the very center of Brussels together with its captivating atmosphere make this area a must-visit while in Brussels. You should not miss out on some of its most authentic bars, here’s some of our favorite.

Situated in a former industrial building dating back to the 19th century, Via Via is a local spot for people interested in travel and city culture. A wide covered courtyard with high ceilings provides the proper set up for exhibitions. This, combined with a wooden interior space with a large traveling guide collection and a cooperative market space, the so-called MicroMarché for young designers exposes their handicrafts and creations. This spot is a hub of multicultural urban vibes, just a few steps away from Place Sainte-Catherine.

2. Monk

Bar, Restaurant, Cafe, Belgian, European

A legendary bar known by most locals has been, for a while now, one of the landmarks around this area. It’s a great place for a quick bite with great beer combinations and great music. Its wooden interior makes for a warm winter escape in a fun environment with friendly service and a satisfying variety of drinks. Whether in a party mood or just fancying a good beer with a lovely view by the church, make sure you stop by Monk.

3. Café Merlo

Café Merlo is a Dutch-speaking traditional pub located at the very end of the square and features an alternative atmosphere with a cozy feeling and some of the best concerts in town. During the summer, its exterior, complete with a small terrace and long passage with a wooden bar, becomes one of the busiest in the area. It’s a hidden gem with more than good pils beer and wonderful staff; it’s a bar with character, a neighborhood favorite for grasping the real Sainte-Catherine vibes.

In the heart of Place Sainte-Catherine, this impressively spacious and stylish bar attracts big crowds for lively nights out in the city center. Loud music and DJ sets keep you up until late hours and make for a fun night in a grand space where everyone is welcome. You can always come here for a quiet afternoon drink and chat, but you can see it at its best during the night while enjoying its joyful vibes and tasty cocktails in a rather friendly setting. Now also in Gent, Brugge and Kortrijk, BAR DES AMIS makes a chain of success and festive spirit at the core of Belgian city life.

Le Jardin de Ma Sœur Café Theatre

An amazingly inspiring local spot in the heart of Sainte-Catherine, this café theater is a place for performance, authentic spectacles, constructive discussions and art. Founded in 1994 at the edge of the ancient Grand Béguinage de Bruxelles, this venue’s interior is part living room and part café, captivating with its warm ambiance, beautiful art selection and quality shows.
