The Best Independent Bookstores in Graz

Updated: 15 February 2018
Graz’s relaxed and quiet nature makes it an ideal destination to settle down with a good book. Here’s our roundup of the best indie bookstores in the city, where you can pick up a holiday read to enjoy in a cozy café or choose a copy to take home with you.

Buchhandlung Gratia

The atmosphere is casual and cozy in Buchhandlung and the friendly owners are on hand to offer you their personal recommendations. Readings and events (mostly in German) are held in the store throughout the year and their website has an online portal so you can order books online and pick them up the following day or order books to be delivered straight to your door (provided you reside in Austria!)

Antiquariat

Antique books don’t generally make the best holiday reads, however, they do look fantastic on your bookshelves and make great gifts for family and friends. Discover rare books and century-old gems at this antique bookstore, a pretty and relaxed shop with the glorious smell of well-thumbed, well-loved yellowing pages from the many aging novels that line the shelves.

Matthäus Truppe

The Association of Antiquarians of Austria was founded in 1949 and has its main hub located in the capital of Vienna, as well as a few other shops dotted around the country. As many of the antique booksellers were forced to relocate abroad following WWII, this, along with the aforementioned antique seller, remains one of the only antique book traders still making business in Austria.
