The principality of Andorra, bordered by both France and Spain in the eastern Pyrenees Mountains, has become an unlikely ski favourite in Europe. The capital, Andorra la Vella, is the highest capital in Europe, and the extensive skiing – split between Grandvalira and Vallnord – is growing ever more popular by the year. The entire ski region has undergone a serious face lift in the last decade, so expect state-of-the-art lifts and hotels. Here’s our guide with the top picks in Andorra.

The capital city of Andorra la Vella is right in the heart of the principality, and Acta Arthotel is just seconds away from the main shops and restaurants. The hotel itself takes inspiration from modern design – there’s a trendy spa with Turkish baths, and the Gallery restaurant on the top floor of the hotel has panoramic views of the city and mountains. Both Grandvalira or Vallnord ski slopes are reached via a 15-minute drive.

It’s rare you get a ski hotel in the shopping district of a capital city, but Eurostars Andorra delivers exactly that. It’s an elegant five-star hotel, with a gym, a sauna and a restaurant specialising in Mediterranean cuisine. The 66 rooms have designer interiors, outward-facing views and are decorated with emblematic Andorran designs. A divide between the living room and bedroom in each room guarantees you’ll have plenty of space in each.

Hotel Les Closes, Escaldes-Engordany

Andorra may not be huge – so while Les Closes is in the parish of Escaldes-Engordany rather than Andorra la Vella, it’s actually only a few minutes’ walk from the capital. You’re also only five minutes from the famous Caldea thermal spa and the centre of Andorra’s restaurants, bars and tax-free shopping. The hotel itself is modern and pet-friendly, and the on-site restaurant serves Spanish tapas and local market cuisine.

NH Andorra la Vella, Andorra la Vella

Another option in the centre of the capital city, NH Andorra La Vella is a short walk from the historic old town. Luxurious rooms have autumnal colours, hardwood floors and huge windows that allow the light to pour in – emphasising those grand views of the Pyrenees Mountains. The Superior rooms have king-sized beds, and the Suite room has a huge terrace plus a dining room and jacuzzi.

You know as soon as you step into the cosmopolitan Plaza Hotel that it’s a five-star place. Sculptures greet you as you walk through the front door, while Paul Smith rugs and oil paintings are showcased throughout. Further in, the piano bar is elegant, and the rooms are designed in a traditional English style. Elsewhere there’s a Tesla charging point and a five-star spa. Don’t be surprised if you catch sight of a few celebrities.

Hotel and Spa Niunit, Ordino

Found in northern Andorra, Hotel Niunit is five minutes from Vallnord Ski Resort. Simple and stylish is the ethos throughout the hotel – the lounge has a trendy, coffee shop feel to it, and the spa extends outside, actually leading down to the Tristaina River. If you’re brave, you can take a dip in the chilly river before sprinting back to the jacuzzi. In the restaurant, try the Andorran veal, which carries the Carn d’Andorra seal.

Hotel SPA Termes SERHS Carlemany, Escaldes-Engordany

Set in a beautiful stone building in Escaldes-Engordany, Turkish baths, hot tubs and saunas await guests at the aptly named Hotel Spa Termes SERHS Carlemany. You can even drink some champagne while in the jacuzzi if you want to make your friends back home extra jealous. The rooms are classically styled, with the Duplex Suite allowing space to spread out – ideal for families. Ski lockers are included, and you’re right next to the tax-free shopping in the city centre.

A warm, family-run but adult-only hotel in Soldeu, the Hotel Naudi Boutique dates back to 1964 and is a stone’s throw from the slopes of Grandvalira. The trendy design has a touch of Scandinavia about it, and gastronomy is an intrinsic part of their offering. Make sure you stop off at the restaurant and sample their experimental takes on local cuisine, even if you’re not staying at the hotel itself.

Located in the village of Sispony in La Massana, one of seven parishes in Andorra, the Abba Xalet Suites Hotel is a couple of kilometres from the La Massana gondola, serving Vallnord Ski Resort. The hotel consists of two buildings, with architecture inspired by French châteaux. Their restaurant focuses on local cuisine – try the stewed oxtail or pil-pil cod.

Hotel Bruxelles, Canillo

Hotel

With homely wooden interiors, high wooden beams and festive curtains, the Bruxelles is a traditional ski hotel. The main reason for that isn’t the decor, though – it’s the fact that the hotel is 50m (164ft) from the Grandvalira ski slopes in Soldeu. Enjoy the 250km (155mi) of Grandvalira’s ski runs, and when you’re done, slide back down to the hotel and grab a beer on the Bruxelles terrace.
