Why not book your next winter holiday in Andorra’s capital city, home to the best ski resorts in the Pyrenees and Europe’s largest spa.

Andorra la Vella is at the heart of this tiny European country, sandwiched between Spain and France. During the winter, visitors flock to ski at Vallnord and Grandvalira. Come summer, hikers arrive for the mountain views and world-famous thermal baths. Book one of these top hotels on your next trip.

If you want your Andorra break to focus on skiing and relaxation, this arty five-star has you covered. The ski package includes access to the on-site spa – complete with an illuminated pool and varied massage menu – as well as ski passes to the Vallnord and Grandvalira resorts. Suites are characterised by an almost space-age minimalism with plenty of natural light. Try modern Andorran cuisine at onsite eatery Instants, or head to the cafe to choose from an extensive selection of coffees.

The family-run Casa Canut offers 31 individually decorated rooms, each taking inspiration from an international architect or designer. The restaurant, La Grandalla dels Set Pétals, is one of the most celebrated in La Vella, especially for its fish, seafood and wine list. The hotel is located in La Vella’s upscale shopping district, but you won’t even need to walk that far for souvenirs, as the hotel also has its own porcelain shop.

NH Andorra la Vella

Hotel

Inside the NH’s functional but smart La Vella hotel, all but the most basic rooms look out over the mountains, city or river. A balcony or terrace comes as standard too, making it a good-value option in the city centre. Meals can be ordered from a nearby restaurant, but a table-buckling buffet breakfast is served on the premises, providing a huge choice of hot and cold dishes (eggs are cooked to order for a small surcharge). If you’re heading out to eat, ask the multilingual staff for their personal favourites.

Mola Park Atiram

Chain Hotel

Atiram’s Mola Park is located directly in front of Caldea, the largest thermal spa in Europe, and within easy walking distance of the Meritxell and Carlemany shopping streets. As well as generous individual storage spaces for bikes, luggage and ski gear, you’ll also have a locker specifically designated for new purchases, so set yourself the challenge of filling it to capacity during your visit. The Grandvalira and Vallnord skiing resorts are both reached with a 15-minute drive.

Hotel Les Closes

Hotel

The best thing about this simple three-star is its location in central la Vella, minutes on foot from key attractions such as the Carmen Thyssen Museum, the Caldea and the Plaça del Poble. Its culinary offering is also superior to many hotels at this price point; head to the long-running Restaurant Les Closes (where the wood-fired pizzas are not to be missed) and the Ninety Three cafe, open every day for morning coffees, evening cocktails and everything in between.

Hotel Spa Termes Carlemany

This chateau-style property is built on a thermal spring, which provides water for every aspect of the hotel. As well as flowing from bathroom taps and filling the pool (a short walk from the hotel), this natural elixir also powers the spa’s jacuzzis, saunas, Turkish baths and Vichy showers. Every Friday and Saturday, tasting menus showcasing local ingredients – sometimes paired with wines – are served in the ground-floor Carlemany Restaurant.

Eurostars Andorra

Luxury

Eurostars hotels usually guarantee affordable luxury, and Andorra’s five-star branch is no exception. Located next to the Pyrenees department store, it offers 66 outward-facing junior suites, all of which have separate living and sleeping areas. They are decorated with artworks depicting the country’s most iconic sights, and some also have mountain views. Restaurant L’Atelier serves Mediterranean and international dishes, plus there’s a cafe-bar for coffees, snacks and drinks.

Hotel Exe Princep

Chain Hotel

If location is the most important consideration when choosing accommodation, book Exe’s four-star Hotel Princep. All of the Andorran capital’s key attractions are within about a 10-minute walk from reception, including the Caldea thermal baths, the shopping district and the old town. 50 double rooms are spread over five floors, and while they won’t be the largest you’ll ever stay in, they’re cosy and well equipped. You can even incorporate a ticket to the Cirque du Soleil into your booking.

Hotel Roc Blanc

Spa Hotel

When it opened in 1960, Roc Blanc became the first hotel in Andorra to harness the power of thermal springs. Some 60 years later, its spa still offers one of the most restorative breaks in the Pyrenees. The chemical composition of its waters is said to make them particularly effective in treating arthrosis, respiratory problems and stress. Couples can enjoy this natural detox centre by booking a one-night bed and breakfast package, which includes massages in a private cabin and a hydromassage bath.

Golden Tulip Andorra Fènix

Chain Hotel

Couples on a romantic getaway in the Andorran capital will find the Golden Tulip hard to beat. Alongside classically styled double and triple rooms, there’s also the Margarita Suite, which features special movement beds and Neotantra sofas. On top of this, your room comes with a welcome pack including a feather duster and eye mask. When not enjoying your room, head up to the rooftop, where you’ll find a food van and a champagne corner.
